I had my first little issue with Reilly this weekend. He and Lilah have been model citizens so far, and it was just one bad morning, so I'm hoping we can avoid it happening again.

He often walks up and watches me clean the litterbox, and once or twice he has sat in it while I was emptying it. I just stand back, let him use it, and then continue cleaning it. Well yesterday, he did that, and after using it he got out and just sat next to the litterbox and stared (make that GLARED!) at me while I was scooping. When I finished I reached up to pet him and he swiped and bit at me (didn't actually land the bite and I'm not sure he was trying to). I left the room afterwards, and when I came back he had pooped - an inch OUTSIDE the litterbox.

Is it possible he just needed to go to the bathroom, and I was making him mad by not leaving the room? Any advice?

He could be a bit possessive about the box. Is it only one litter box for two cats? Maybe you should add another one. While you are cleaning one, Reilly will be busy with the other one and let you scoop in peace after he is done.
