So I'm undertaking to toilet train my cats, Spats and Oonagh. They're both very intelligent cats, but we're having a problem. No matter what I do, they don't understand that they're supposed to put their paws on the toilet seat. They want to stand in the litter, which makes it really difficult. Any suggestions?

What are you using to train them?

I used the litter kwitter system and go them all trained in about 10-12 weeks. As we moved up the levels they put their paws on the seat as there's no where else they can put them.

I just made something that looks like the litter kwitter out of aluminum roasting pans, then I've got a wooden box for them to step up to the toilet. The problem they're having is that they insist on lowering themselves down into the part that has the litter in it, crunching up and then going. I've tried so hard to show them how to put their paws on the seat, but they just get angry with me. Spats is slightly larger, being a boy cat, and he once collapsed the whole thing into the toilet bowl.

Good luck. I find it just easier to use the litter pan. It's not worth my time to try and train them - and you only have a 50/50 chance. I had one cat that I got half trained; till he saw the water in the toilet - then he refused to get up on the seat any more.

That's what they do at first, the LK is level with the seat and the middle is filled with litter which they stand in just like a regular litter pan.

So you're aluminium pans probably wouldn't work for that, as the LK is hard plastic.

Well, If you had asked this question in a couple months, I may have a better answer for you.

But, I AM in the process of toilet training (For a human toilet) my two cats, ages 3 years and

5 years. The older is a girl, the younger is a boy, both fixed from 6 months or so old.

They are doing really well.. An adult cat CAN BE TRAINED to use the toilet.

Just show her where the toilet is. I've found that technique to work in the past with litter boxes so a toilet should be no different. Just set her down on the seat. She will take it from there.
