Ok this is my third post about inappropriate urination/pooping issues with my cat Sophie.

First I should mention that we have four cats. None of the others have EVER, not once, used anything but the litter boxes. We have four boxes circulating at all times (we live in a two bedroom apartment so this is the max we can have.

Sophie pees on EVERYTHING. When I say everything, that is no exaggeration.

Up until this morning, the only place she had pooped besides a litter box is our bathtub, which I don't really mind because it's easy to clean before my husband notices.

The past couple of weeks, she has started to pee on the bed. My husband already hates this cat due to all the issues she has caused, but I've cleaned the bedding and bed four times with enzyme cleaner.

Then this morning, the worst thing that has ever happened.

I walked into the bedroom (I've made a rule, she's not allowed in there without supervision, but this morning my husband didn't shut the door) and there was a huge pile of poop on the bed.

That is a first.

I don't know what to do. We spent a fortune at the vet and everytime we go back, they need even MORE tests. We just can't afford all of that. I've tried every suggestion possible, changed litter, tried different spots, different litters, different EVERYTHING.

I blame myself because this cat was taken away from her mother at five weeks. I was unaware at the time how horrible that was for a kitten. I just had no idea.

My husband is at the end of his rope. He threw a shoe at her this morning. I feel like a referee constantly getting in the way of his outbursts because this cat has caused so much harm.

I can't give her away knowing she has these problems, because I know she won't be able to be re-homed, especially in my area with her issues. I can't face the thought of this animal I love with all my heart being euthanized because of a mistake *I* made.

Please please please help me!!!!!!!!!

I should also mention that we switched to Tidy Cats Breeze and we absolutely love it.

All of the other cats use it and seem to love it as well.

Sophie won't go near it.

She will only use regular litter , WHEN she uses regular litter and so it's gotten to the point where we're going to have to switch back to regular litter altogether because when I leave regular litter out for Sophie, all the other cats use it too and that defeats the point.

God I'm SO lost!!!!

Obviously the litterbox is an issue. You need to get one Sophie will use.

Has she been tested for a UTI? When? How many times? I've tested a cat(it came out negative) when a few weeks later the cat is peeing blood (definitive UTI then).

I'm sorry you're having so much trouble. From your description I wonder Sophie doesn't like to share a box? As an experiment, I would isolate her in a room with a 2 clean litter boxes with Cat Attract litter and see if she uses them. I would give her 2 in case she wants one for urine and one for feces. The Cat Attract litter would be in case she has gotten so used to going outside the box that she needs to be retrained to use one. If she consistently uses the boxes when isolated I don't what you can do except rehome her where she will be an only cat and so won't have to share a litter box. Or maybe a Litter Robot would work for her??

I used to use a pelleted litter and also loved it but had to stop using it when I got Jeta because she wouldn't use it.

Good luck!

She's been tested twice, months apart.
This has been going on for about a year now. She'll be two in February.

Before I forget to say it, thanks to both of you for responding, it sounds so silly but I am in agony over this.

Where does one buy cat attract litter?? I definitely want to try that ASAP.

I have three feliway diffusers going all around the apartment. I've decided to get a blacklight and some super duty cleaner. We've been using a special enzyme cleaner that we bought from the vet but it costs a fortune and doesn't seem to be working.

Does this work:
http://www.valleyvet.com/swatches/24122_L_vvs_000.jpg

Or anything along those lines that claims to take out not only the urine but also the pheromones that cats are attracted to??

I am going to do a complete over-haul in the apartment, I can't even BEGIN to tell you how much money we've spent on this cat already. She fell out of a window last year and had to have two thousand dollar surgery.

Is there any way without isolation that I can prevent the other cats from using "her" box???

I know she has anxiety problems, she's not a friendly cat in the least, she always seems angry and has never allowed us to pet her. We are not well off at all financially and just can't afford this, and because of her negative personality, I *KNOW* no one will take her.

That's really going to solve the problem!. I'm not getting at you btw, i'm aiming it at your husband

Does he do this sort of thing often?, because if he does it's no wonder she doesn't want to be petted

No that was a first actually.

He was at the end of his rope.

I gave him a good smack on the arm for that one!

I really can't blame him for losing control. The cat has ruined clothes, carpet, pretty much everything and now is leaving feces on the bed.

She's always been unfriendly, we've tried so hard to get her to be nicer.

Wait - she fell out a window....did this start before or after that?

Some cats are by nature aloof (deemed "unfriendly). That's one of the major drawbacks to a kitten - you can never tell what they'll be like purr-sonality wise grown up. There's not much you can do to change that - it's just Sophie.

I don't think it is silly at all. In your shoes I would be in agony also.

I've seen it at PetsMart. You might need to order it online.

I don't know anything about the most effective cleaners. I'll let someone answer those questions.

You could put her box in a closet and add a radio controlled cat flap to the closet door. You would put a collar on her that "unlocks" the flap and allows only her to get in it. You would have to train her to use the flap though and obviously this isn't something you could get setup quickly.

It sounds like Sophie is severely stressed. I have one kitty like this. She is on Prozac now which helps her some. If Sophie is an insecure kitty, just a look from one or more of the other cats can be enough to over intimidate her.

I agree on finding a box and litter type Sophie likes and making sure the other cats cannot use it.

Actually some isolation from the other cats in a "safe room" might help to determine just what is triggering this behavior in Sophie.

Last question, since Sophie had the surgery are you sure she is not in pain. Have you tried a dose of buprenorphine to see if she behaves differently? Pain could make her extra fearful to interact with the other cats, especially if one is bullying her.

When she first came home from the hospital, she had one of those patches on with the morphine type medicine that lasts three days.

She was a completely different cat, purring constantly, on my lap looking for attention.

I figured she was just high from the strong medicines.

She's had follow up checkups , the surgery was almost a year ago and the vet said she was doing fine.

Would putting her on prozac be expensive??? The vet said he needs to do a full ADDITONAL checkup before putting her on any medications, that checkup is going to cost about $500, which we absolutely don't have. I've tried three different vets and they all seem like scam artists with the amount of money they charge for everything.

I want to make my baby better, but I have to figure out how to do this without my husband recommending putting her to sleep for the upteenth time.

He insists we just can't afford it and she's mean, no one would ever adopt her.

I love her, like right now she's curling up on my lap to take a nap, which she rarely does but I cherish it when she does. I just feel so guilty and want to do whatever I can!!!

Given this, I vote for Prozac also. I don't know what it costs but if it helps you may not have to use it permanently. After being on it for a time she may learn to relax and be comfortable your home and you can wean her off of it. I've never used it so I'm just guessing here...

To be perfectly honest I don't remember.

She wasn't really using the potty that much because the medicine made her lose her appetite, which the vet said was normal.

Are you anywhere near Taunton? If you are I would highly recommend my vet, who is a feline specialist.

I'm actually from Taunton, I live about 45 minutes from there now but visit often.

Who is she and is she "reasonable" as far as price goes???

She is no more money than any other vet, but will absolutely not try to talk you into anything you don't need. I know I have suggested different things to her before and she will warn me if they are pricey and say if she feels there is no point in doing them instead of trying to scam me for more money.

It's the Taunton Cat Hospital - 508-824-CATS.

This is only a small suggestion; I do think its' a great idea if you could see the feline specialist that Abby's Mom suggested (maybe kitty needs some Prozac?).....but I was just wondering if maybe having a covered litterbox would help (assuming you don't current use that type?). Some cats need more privacy than others. I have 5 cats and 6 litterboxes (in a storage area in my basement). 2 of the 6 are covered (hooded). a couple of my crew prefer these by far. It seems one is more used for peeing, the other more for pooping.

It's been my understanding that when a cat begins pooping in inappropriate places, it's caused by them intentionally avoiding the litterbox -- often due to them having a UTI, or constipation (and they begin to associate the box with "discomfort").

If she previous used regular litter, I'd definitely switch back to that (though someone had suggested Cat Attract so maybe give that a try?)

It does seem like she's very stressed. Unfortunately it's possible that she's one of those cats who would do much better in a home "as the only cat."
