Yesterday my younger sister txted me all freaked out cuz she couldn't log into her World of Warcraft account. She tried to get her password incase she'd forgotten it, and she got an email from the support people saying her account was under investigation. So I called her to see what was going on.

While I was talking to her she was all worried because a friend of hers had given her 6k gold, and was afraid that maybe they thought she had bought that gold, that is a banable offense, buying gold.

I told her that maybe that was it, and her account could be banned, but she could probably petition it, and get her account back. Then off the top of my head I threw another idea at her... maybe your account was hacked. Maybe someone got in there and stole everything. Just a stupid idea that popped up. I told her if that was the case, she would get her account back, no problem. So she settled down, and hoped that had been the case.

Today I got a txt from her saying her account had been hacked and she got it back. When I got off work I found out that the hackers had stolen EVERYTHING. Everything from all her toon's banks. Everything off of her toons. All her toons were naked, by mailboxes, with not one item on them.

There is something called the blizzard authenticator that is extra secruty for your account so it can't be hacked.

She lost 7k gold, and her enchanting supplies, and all her gear, everything, down to the most minute grey worthless item. Stripped naked. I hear there is nothing that can be done. I think they should be able to track it somehow. They should be able to reimburse her somehow... I don't know. I was pretty angry even though it has nothing to do with me.

I ordered some blizzard authenticators for my, and my hubby's accounts. It's so rude that people steal like that. My sister has been playing for almost 3 years like my hubby and I have. She's never made it to lvl 70, cap is 80 now, but she just enjoys playing the game. She's not out to have the best gear. She's not out to make people mad. She's not even out to pvp, and someone targets her. I do a lot of auctioning, and selling stuff, as well as collecting rare pets, and items. Now I am so afraid to even log into my account. Everyon's got the 'it will never happen to me' attitude, but that is so close to home it's got me competely feeling vulnerable.

I know... mmorpgs are dumb to a lot of people, but all my friends and my siblings play, and it is my link to them all since I am in Louisiana, and they are all in Wyoming. It beats phone bills and writing emails and letters.

So... if you do play an MMORPG, look into security. IF you play WoW, check into the Blizzard Authenticator.

I finally have a lvl 70, she's 71 now, and I would quit playing all together if that ever happened to me.

Be safe...

Nuh uh...might give me away!
Unfortunately, it seems someone either guessed her password, or she downloaded a program that transmitted her logins from her computer to a third party. I wouldn't call that hacking, but it is wise to be aware of such things.

When it is all said in done, don't open attachments unless you KNOW what it is, don't share your password with anyone else, and if one account of yours is breached for whatever reason, any other account with that same password should be changed for safety reasons.

Hope the authenticators work for you! I think they've had issues with them in the past, but hopefully those have been addressed.

The GMs called it being hacked, so that is what we are calling it. Yeah the issues have been addressed, I read all about them before I ordered them, as well as the news I could find.

My sister has never used a mod or an add on, or anything like that. I don't either for fear of what could happen. My brother did however bring up a point, he said he thinks she played with Yahoo IM open. If I want to chat, I use my laptop and play on my desktop. If I want to look someting up, same thing, or I exit out of the game. There was an issue with IE and people getting wow logins or paswords. I just dont run anything at the same time as wow on my desktop.

be safe.

Well, if the GMs say hacked, then hacked it is. I have chat programs open when I play, but I don't actively use them. DH or I use a laptop to look things up, and we NEVER us IE.

I play runescape and there's a lot of time and effort into earning money on that game. I would be so mad if I got hacked. It happens all the time on those games. I haven't played in a long time because I am bored with the game but my account is still active. I do check every once in awhile to see if I still have my inventory.
