The vet also has injectable pepcid available but it is a big shot. Make sure it is ac and not plain pepcid

Best of luck

Hey Ken!

Don't you mean not to use Pepcid "complete" -- that it should only be Pepcid AC (famotidine, which means the generic "famotidine" can be used). The "complete" formula has other ingredients that cats shouldn't have.
It should read do not give your cat Pepsid AC just regular Peosid or the generic version famotidine. Correct?

From Tanya's Website: http://www.felinecrf.org/nausea_vomiting_stomach_acid.htm

Famotidine (Pepcid AC) is the most commonly used medication for feline CKD-related stomach acid problems in the USA, and it is a very effective treatment for excess stomach acid. As a side effect, famotidine may reduce parathyroid hormone levels in CKD patients. Famotidine reduces serum parathyroid hormone levels in uremic patients (1991) Arik N, Arinsoy T, Sayín M, Taşdemir I, Yasavul U, Turgan C, Caglar S Nephron 59(2) p333 explains more about this. I would not use famotidine to treat elevated PTH levels only.
http://Famotidine Formulations

Famotidine is available as a generic or, in the USA, under the brand name Pepcid AC. Famotidine may be sold under a different name in your country (e.g. Amfamox, Famox or Pepcidine in New Zealand and Australia). General Medical shows which trade names famotidine is known by in various countries. Famotidine is available in the USA as a tablet, oral suspension or as an injectable.

Famotidine Tablets

USA

Pepcid AC (Regular Strength) in the USA contains 10mg of famotidine. If you opt for the brand name, there are quite a few Pepcid products available so make sure you buy the correct one. You need Pepcid AC 10mg but not the chewable type, and not Pepcid Complete, both of which have some ingredients which make them unsuitable for CKD cats. There is also a new version called Pepcid Maximum Strength, which is the same as Pepcid AC except that it contains twice as much famotidine, so be very sure you have the correct strength (10mg tablets).

Using generic famotidine is acceptable, but make sure it is the correct strength and that it does not contain any additional ingredients.

Where did you get the Pepcid AC compounded? Does our vet have to order it?
There are websites you can order it at. Your vet will be contacted because it's considered a prescription at that point I think. Or you could just get a prescription for your vet and take it to your local drugstore.

Yes! Its like a miracle drug. Pepcid AC tablets. Seriously. The 1/4 tab is the regular dosage, very safe, and has been very effective for us. I keep some handy at home. Its great for vomiting and not eating and for acid buildup.

You dont need to compound it. Buy it at Target, Wally Word, drugstore and pop it in their mouth. Easy peasy and cheap.

I am using Pepcid AC for my guy.

FYI: if you find your cat is spitting out the tablet, it is because Pepcid has a horrible taste. I cannot quite describe it but it is so gross...

I did have it compounded into a liquid, thinking that would help mask the flavor.  No way.. Artie kept spitting it out, to the point where he was running around the house wth spittle of pepcid hanging from his mouth...Yes, not a pretty sight.

I finally tasted it.. gross..

I now use an empty size 3 or 4 gelcap (from Amazon) for it..with a pill gun... and a chaser of water... no problems at all....down the hatch!

Good Luck...

ps... I had it compounded at a family run pharmacy. The Vet knew about them. It was about $30 for a 30 day supply.

Now I just get the OTC pills and use a pill cutter.

About the taste...mine tastes fine and cats take it with ease. I have either the Kroger or Target brand...maybe its just a more mild flavor than the brand name? Weird.

You've tasted the inside of a generic Pepcid? Or just the coated outside?

It is bitter, but my cat also takes it pretty well. I actually question if she can taste things because I've heard her crunch on it. Lucky on the other hand used to drool like made when giving it to him.

I'm trying to think back how I handled it with Lucky. I think until I got the gel caps, the little guy had to have it smashed into a powder, mixed with a bit of water, and syringed into him. Needless to say, it was not any prettier than the pill itself in his mouth. My poor little old man. Then I finally got the gel caps which helped a lot. Then the one vet donated the injectable famotidine which was a godsend. I swear it feels like the whole thing took place over months and months but it was just 16 days.

Sara decided she didn't like pill pockets lately, so I bought some pill wraps that are bacon flavored. They say they're for dogs, I just rip them into fourths, toss the pills in there. She chomps it on down and then wants more.

Hi everyone, just need alittle advice or reassurance really.my 9yr old female cat "penelope" tummy is making very load gurgling noises like ours would when we are hungry, it's only just started happening but loud enough to keep us awake, she doesn't seem unwell (I know they mask illness well) she is eating, drinking, pooping +weeing, playing+purring as much as she normally would so no noticeable behavioural changes , she has always had a bit of a fragile stomach and as a result is on a veterinary gastrointestinal moderate calorie dry food diet
In the main over the last year she has been very well on, so my question is am I being over cautious by worrying about digestive noises/gas ect? Will it stop? Can I give her anything to elevate the noise? ..any help would be aappreciated thankyou

Hi everyone! I have a question, wondering if anyone has tried both Pepcid AC and Cerenia as acid blockers/ for nausea. I have a 17 yr old CKD cat who is having issues with his appetite. Some days he will eat anything and everything, other days nothing at all. The vet recommended Pepcid ac, but after failing to get the full dosage in each time (he would spit out or bring up foam after I tried giving the AC) she recommended Cerenia. The Cerenia is ALOT easier to give, as it has no taste. But sometimes I feel it's uneffective..

I'm wondering, what helps with stomach acid / nausea more... Cerenia or Pepcid ac?

From what I gather online, Cerenia works to block nausea by blocking the signals in the brain. It doesn't actually deal with the excess stomach acid that results from CKD. Pepcid AC works directly on the stomach acid. Have you tried getting the Pepcid compounded into a liquid? I did that for Smoochie because she's also difficult to pill and it works out much better. I ordered it in chicken flavor, but they had all sorts of tasty options.

Hi CinChats! I didn't even know it came in flavors. I had just bought it over the counter at the pharmacy. Did you order online somewhere or through your vet?

The vet said because our cat keeps smacking his lips and drooling; he's nauseated so instead use the Cerenia (which will be easier too) However I hear his stomach gurgling a lot and he's just not eating that much. So I'm really not sure if it's the stomach acid or he actually is just nauseated. I should add, he is not vommiting, so that's not as issue.

Sorry I missed your question for so long! My vet ordered it through a local compounding pharmacy for me. Some of the flavor options they had included bacon/ham, chicken, peanut butter, fruity, cheese, etc. I grab her scruff lightly then use the syringe to squeeze it into the side of her mouth. Works like a charm!

Oh no worries! I just got some Pepcid compounded today and gave him his first dose. Ironically he threw up white foam twice today, so I'm hoping this will make him feel better. And you are so right, It's SO much easier to give like this! Now my only question is, if I should be giving him both the Pepcid and Cerenia. I'm never sure if it's just stomach acid or him beating nauseated too. :(
