To anyone here who has or has had, a kitty on long-term Prednisone......did you notice any behavior/personality changes and if so, what were they?

Taco's (15.5 yrs old) been on it now for a good 4 weeks, dosing as follows:

2.5mg twice daily x 4 days
2.5mg daily x 4 days
2.5mg every 2nd day (which is what he's currently on)

He has osteosarcoma (malignant tumors) of the soft tissue; a half-egg sized lump to his scruff and one half that size to his right side. He's had surgery twice to remove the scruff tumors (Apr and May 2008) but it recurred, obviously (which I knew there was, unfortunately, a high risk for).

With this type of tumor, it apparently is "driven" by inflammation so if you can give an anti-inflammatory (like Piroxicam) or Prednisone, you can at least slow down the growth of the tumor. Piroxicam wasn't an option for him due to early stages of CRF so I opted for the Pred. I had to adjust his twice daily insulin dose by a half unit, to account for the slightly elevated blood sugar due to the Pred, no biggie.

But I've noticed that sometimes he seems sort of "spaced out." He'll just sit there in the hall and stare. Sometimes just not his usual talkative self. He's still very active (as an 18.4 lb kitty can be!) and eats well. But he just seems a little more aloof and "off."

I have read that Pred can caused "behavioral changes" but in everything I've read, it fails to give more specific info on what "kind" of behavioral changes.

Can anyone please comment on their experiences? This kind of wigs me out a bit. I sometimes wonder "has the cancer spread and to his brain?" but there are days when he's sharp as a whip and very friendly and chatty and his usual sucky self.

He spends more time down in my basement which is odd. 2 weeks ago I reorganized my rec room in my basement and since then, that is "THE" place to spend the day......on the futon down there....whereas before, he was always upstairs in his cozy cat bed or sprawled across the top of the couch or on the cushions of the couch. He just won't stay out of the basement, it's bizarre to me. And it's not that it's cooler down there (it's not). That kind of wigs me out, too. I know cats are notorious (or at least my 5 are) for being like children in the respect that when they encounter something "new", they think it's pretty cool (eg: buy a new cat bad, well that's the place to be for weeks)

Thoughts?

Many thanks
Lisa

Coco did do some strange things when she was on it.
She would be cleaning herself then just stop and stare and sshe would wander around meowing.
I think some of it might have been from her high bp though.
She did eat alot when she was on pred also.
She was on 5 mgs a day then we tapered down before we took her off it.

My Stumpy (age 13) has been on pred for about 2 years now. Since he was in so much pain (eventually we had all of his teeth extracted from an autoimmune disease that attacked his teeth), his behavior improved remarkably from it. Every time I've tried to lower his dose, he immediately relapsed. So basically, giving him the pred allows Stumpy to be Stumpy. Without it, he's crotchety from the pain. He's on 5mg every other day, most likely for the rest of his life.

So in other words, you haven't noticed what I've been noticing; the "spaced out" kind of thing, not as chatty, spending time in unusual spots, etc?

Taco is a big boy at 18.4 lbs and I don't think that 2.5mg every 2nd day has a huge impact? It's barely impact his blood sugar and i sure wouldn't say it's made him a lot hungrier; I don't notice him drinking more water or peeing more, either.

No, haven't noticed any of those things. If anything, he was behaving the way you described before I put him on the pred. He's back to normal while on it. Without teeth, he is eating relatively normal and doesn't really drink more than normal.

Stumpy dropped down to about 11 pounds when he was very ill, and is back up to a better weight of 12.5 now. 2.5mg for an 18.4 pound cat is a fairly low dose.

I had a long talk with a cat specialist last month about my Muddy, who was also just recently been put on pred for life (he is only 5). I asked about diabetes testing while on pred and she said that studies show that the effect on their blood sugar is usually short lived (like in the first 2 months if they have it at all). After that, they adapt to it and their blood sugar levels out. We're watching him very closely during this time until we make sure he is over the hump. He has an auto-immune based cystitis and he blocks without anti-inflamatories.

Earth, man.
This is a very interesting thread. Over the years I have been prescribed Prednisone for my Asthma. Side effects I have suffered from include insomnia, weight gain, and very vivid horrible dreams. The doctor always prescribes me a sleeping pill to go along with the Prednisone to help with the sleep. A classic case of a prescription to combat the side effects of the original prescription. No wonder drug companies have such large profits.

I wish your cat the best of luck. In my opinion this is a truly terrible, although necessary drug.

Wellington has been on pred for almost three years for asthma. He started on 5 mg per day but it is now down to 1.5 - a quarter of a tablet every other day, except in autumn as the weather changes and then he has it every day to hold off an attack. In summer he rarely needs it. I cannot say I notice any changes in him - he did change when his brother Napoleon died, but that was not due to the drug!

I'm also interested in any advice regarding the Prednisolone, now that Maverick's been put on it for his liver functions. He's only been on it for a little over 2 weeks, but so far, I haven't noticed any changes.

london but about to move to forres
Panda has Lymphoma and the cancer spread to kidneys and chest. it all started 3 months ago with jaundice (on his 12th birthday). giving the pills turned out to be a nightmare, so now he gets a longterm injection that contains P but is usually used for sin diseases and some tumours. he is a lot less stressed since he doesn't have to go through the pill-drama. his behaviour didn't change though - might be the disease that changes the cat's behaviour (sleeping more etc). i don't know how long he's got and it's killing me but at least his quality of life is better with the injection.

I know this os an older thread but I thought I'd put my 2 cents in. My guy is on prednisolone for IBD. He also has diabetes. We've been doing the pred for about 6-8 months and this cat is driving my crazy! He is constantly demanding food. I'd say every 4 hours. If I leave and come back he expects food. Before the pred he was chatty but this is beyond chatty. I've not noticed any spacing out or any other effects. Maybe because when he's quiet I'm enjoying the silence too much [emoji]128513[/emoji]

My furkid, Tater Tot was on Pred right after being diagnosed with IBD for about 6 weeks before we switched him to budesenide. He was a complete jerk to my youngest cat while on Pred. He 2ould attack the younger one like he was trying to kill him. And this was while he was recuperating from pancreatitis. Now, some might say the behavior was due to his illness, but after talking to 2 different vets we all felt like it was the pred. Since switching to budesenide, he is less aggressive and has really calmed down. My internist vet said that behavior change while on pred is extremely common.

Hi there old post! My kitten has been on pred since he was 2 months and hes almost 11 months now. Was on 5mg a day doing okay but this last month its doubled and he doesnt want to do anything. Its very upsetting. He is on atopica now 50mg new meds and specialist is trying to replace the pred with atopica. So in a week we will check his platelets and if they're normal range then slowly wean off pred and in hopes he wont need pred and if all goes well in 6 months wean off atopica too
