She is eating some dry food I am sure. I want Lita to put on weight and she has showed that in the last 3 days
I am sure that she never ate 5 1/2 ounce's of wet food ever in her 6 years alive within a 24 hour period
She has not thrown up as I watch her like a hawk. Purebred Ragdolls are extra special just like all other kitties
I cannot feel Lita's spine and tail bone nearly as they were last week. I will weigh her this weekend
She is doing better each day

I am glad she is gaining weight, and doing better every day... I am sorry she was wobbly today - I hope she is all better tomorrow. I am impressed with how much she is eating! That's great! Is she walking around? Does she have the IV 24x7? Just curious...

Carolinalima.......Lita is put on an IV one time per day to put in 200ml of fluid into her blood stream for her kidneys to absorb. I do the whole chore alone. It is a 4 minute or less session to dispense all the IV fluid into her "back" I stick the needle in her back skin (big needle)
. She HATES IT BIGTIME!
Lita has been feed 5 1/2 ounces of Science Diet A/D canned per day by syringe also+ 2 doses of an Amoxyicillin per day

Wow, that's a HECKUVA lot of SubQ (that's what you're giving, not actually "IV" - IV means "intravenous" or into the vein....this is SubQ, short for subcutaneous, meaning it goes under the skin) fluids to receive on a daily basis......how long are you supposed to do that for? Even cats with significant chronic kidney failure don't get that much on a daily basis. Too much fluids can cause congestive heart failure (fluid to build-up around the heart and lungs). Additionally, too much fluids ("overhydration") can cause the cat to lose many vital "electrolyes" in their urine......like potassium. Low potassium can cause major electrical problems with the heart, which can be fatal. Low potassium levels can also cause generalized weakness, lethargy, constipation and lack of appetite.

Are the fluids fully absorbed from one session to the next? Because if they're not, kitty is at major risk of overhydration. That can seriously be life threatening. That sure makes the kidneys work hard, too.

When giving SubQ fluids, you should make sure the "fluid pouch" is gone before giving the next session of fluids. The "fluid pouch" is basically the bulge of fluids you'll see, usually down one leg or wherever the fluids settle due to gravity, while waiting to be absorbed into the body. If that pouch remains, that means the cat is adequately hydrated and to give more is not necessary.

200 cc's is also too much to give in one spot.........usually when people have to give more than 100 or 125cc, they divide it up into 2 spots. A volume of 200ccs is an incredible amount that has to stretch the skin..........and that's painful!

If your Vet told you to give this much on a daily basis, wow.........I'd be finding a new Vet !!

Also, due to the enormous amount of fluids you're giving, that could account for some weight gain, when you're weighing your kitty.

Here's some good info on SubQ fluids......overhydration, etc etc.

Lita gives me unconditional love in my very hard times here being unemployed.......She is worth every minute of my time. I love her unconditionally just the same as she loves me knowing that I am helping her get better
Where are you gonna find a spouse with the same thoughts as this seriously in today's tough times ??? Thank you for caring......We really appreciate it

I didn't cheat in the least; I've been following your posts from the very start because I've been worried for your cat.

What I understand from your posts is, your fairly young cat developed a very high fever, was "bone thin" when you first posted this thread, and without any bloodwork being done, your vet has "guessed" that your cat has a kidney infection and you are giving a whopping amount of daily subQ fluids, and antibiotics. I don't believe I missed anything.

What I wrote above still very much stands. The whole point of subQ fluid therapy is to re-hydrate the cat and then maintain hydration. Once re-hydration is achieved, you would give less fluids on a regular basis if at all. If you're getting 5 1/2 oz of liquified canned foods into your cat a day, that's more than enough fluids to maintain hydration. But to give 200cc more daily, sorry - but that's asking for a whole lot of trouble. Even a young cat with a healthy heart can develop congestive heart failure. With the much fluid in the body, the heart has to pump a lot harder to distribute the additional fluid volume. A heart can only work "overtime" for so long before it loses its efficiency at which time fluid will build-up around the heart and lungs, which is a serious and life-threatening situation. I had a cat w/ congestive heart failure, so I'm basing this on my personal experience.

Also, if in fact your cat has a kidney infection, that sheer volume of fluids on a regular basis, when they're not needed, is making those kidneys that are trying to get over an infection have to work so much harder.

I gave subQ fluids to my old CRF cat for 2 years so I learned everything I could get my hands on, re: fluid therapy, the importance of avoiding overhydration, the signs of fluid overload/retention, etc etc. I still give 2 of my senior cats fluids every couple of weeks.

i wish you and your cat well, I really do.

I will be taking Lita back for a recheck on Monday. I will talk to him about this then as he is the professional. If he says to cut it back......I gladly will
Thanks for the feedback

I skipped Lita's IV fluid treatment today. The Food lady scared me with her knowledge
Lita has been gaining very small amounts of weight and seems very happy and active
I have decided that I will blood test her on Monday with the extra money left over after paying my bills from my generous brothers loan to me
My 6 cats are my children......I only want the very best for them always. Lita is my best friend as I said before so she gets a very high priority in my life
Thanks for your concern

Ya know........being unemployed and with my cats more that I would have expected........I really feel soooo stupid that I did not see Lita's sickness coming on beforehand
I really got a wake up call here with one of my 6 cat's
Live and learn they say........I love all animals and would react the same if I owed any of them. Thanks for your support as always

Why would you use that smiley? The Food Lady took her time to write out all of that info for you, to HELP you with your cat and you show her such disregard like that?

I think she meant she was scary... I personally don't think that was disregard, since she did follow the food lady's advice and stopped the SubQ and is getting the blood work done... Sorry, but this is my opinion... Her actions speak quite loudly in respect to the food lady's posts - louder than a smiley anyways... Again, just my opinion.

I didnt say anything about what she did, I said to say this to someone who has not only offered you help, but very detailed help of things that will save your cat from being VERY SICK is a very disregarding thing to say to someone.

You took my post the wrong way.......if you go reread my post.......I meant it out of respect for the food ladies post.......not out of disrespect to her
I use tons of smilies in all my post.....let's not judge each other because you did not like a certain smiley that I selected.
