Over the river and through the woods...
So, I sent the link that Keith (Whiskey'sDad) posted to most of the people on my email list with a little note of explaination asking if they can't donate to at least pass it on to any other animal lovers they know. I've gotten a few responses that have mainly been favorable.

I got a reply today from my one aunt (NOT my favorite) stating, and I quote:

"Sorry, I donate money to PEOPLE who need food and shelter!"

No "hi" "how ya doing" "jump in a lake" nothing. I was SO mad. I felt like she was critisizing me because I happen to care about abandonded animals. If she didn't agree she could have just deleted it! THEN, she had the nerve to send me an email about the painted cats that some people pay $60,000/year to keep painted, along with the commentary of "Imagine how many hungry people you could feed with $60,000".

You have to understand this person. She thinks she's better than most of the family because she happened to marry into money. I hardly ever see her anymore now that my mom and grandparents have passed and I like it that way.

I fumed about this for 1/2 hour before I finally had to respond. I simply wrote:

"That's great. I'm glad we both have our favorite charities. I just happen to like animals more than most people I know."

Yeah, the next family reunion should be fun.

So ask her how many thousands of dollars she actually HAS donated to starving children\\people charites...if she can't give an answer, or gives the typical "that's MY business", you have your answer...she is all talk, and no action.

Great comeback!
Don't let her get to you... sounds as if she's somewhat bitter.

I know the type. I am an animal advocate 24/7 and I am surrounded by people who aren't. It's hard not to get depressed about the unawareness in this world.

I think it's important to look after both - children and animals - who cannot advocate for themselves. So I donate money to the local food banks and time and money to my animal rescue group.

But I don't shove it in people's faces. I know EXACTLY the kind of person you're aunt is - totally self-absorbed and self-righteous. Ugh!

Ugh. That was a great response though.

I don't understand how people can forward emails without first checking snopes. It should just be automatic, receive a forward making an outragous claim, check snopes, khalas (enough).

Then she wouldn't like me much, because I only donate to animals who need food and shelter.

I love your comeback to her, BTW

Oh Keith, that you for posting the story! I have had a few email responses...some saying they will do their part, other's saying they can't for this year and will forward and keep the link to help next tax year. I don't know if that will be too late or not, but I think most will forward it to others.

So far, I haven't gotten a reply from her so either she just deleted it, or I'm the talk of the family (which I highly doubt...I'm not that important). And, the family reunions only happen for weddings or funerals and since the last immediate family passed away in October, I really shouldn't have to see her for a loooonnngggg time! Woohoo!

Geez, I know the type perfectly. My friend works for a wildlife rescue centre, and she tells me that ever so often, when asked to donate, people sneer "Sorry they only donate to people", with the emphasis.

I personally refuse to donate to people charities. I have limited funds, and since people charities are already getting so much help since the majority of the population support human charities while very few help animal ones, well, its a no-brainer choice for me!

Just to share, in Singapore there was a case in which a large charity organisation called the National Kidney Foundation was found to be misappropriating funds. Since then, the government has been calling for a widescale check on all charities, and I they cracked down on another organisation.

This does even more to strengthen my belief that human charities are just not worth donating to. No one who has the intention to cheat people's donations would bother opening an animal charity because, heck, the amount donated would never be able to rival the amount donated to human charities.
