I would say I am about 30-40 percent gray, so I do need some color that works well with stubborn gray. (coarse wavy hair)
Your hair is exactly like mine. Try the Preference.

I use the Preference by L'Oreal; my hair would be totally grey if I didn't color it and this covers really well. My only complaint is that the grey roots start to re-appear after about 3 weeks. Don't know if my hair is growing that fast, or the color just doesn't last much longer than that.

I like the L'oreal Feria, but I have dark hair and it's one of the few that I find lasts a good long time and works on my hair colour.

I also like Herbatint. It's a bit more expensive, (about $18 canadian) but you can save it after it's openned and if you have short hair I've found you can get 2-4 applications from one package. It's also a natural-base and doesn't have the chemical smell of most hair colours.

OK, Ladies. I purchased L'Oreal Preference in Medium Brown. That looked about right. It may be several days before I get a chance to color my hair - have family coming from out of town this weekend and I am super busy with that.

I will let you know how it goes.

This thread is from December... took me two months to get around to coloring my hair. I bought Superior Preference by LOreal in natural medium brown. It's perfect! Looks almost as good as the salon dye job, which has a somewhat richer color.

But I really like the result. and for $9, it's a keeper.

OK - imagine that about a third of the crown and 100 percent of the temples and sides were gray and the color was a washed out version of this:

Oh - that's my Panasonic Lumix TZ3 - last year's Christmas prezzie!

I like Natural Instincts b/c it only lasts about 6 weeks and washes out. I've been using that for a few months, but haven't found the right color yet. I want a straight dark chocolate, with not a lot of red in it. Everything I've tried so far makes me look like a cherry. lol

I prefer no ammonia ones, b/c the ammonia smell makes me sick. I love the way Natural Instincts smells. Mmmmm!

This smells nice, too. Just got a whiff now and then of the ammonia. I need permanent color b/c of my gray hair - too much of it and it's coarse and wiry.

i use that, too - i'm VERY sensitive to ammonia - makes it hard for me to breathe.
i use the lightest blond there is - changes my gray to blond, for the most part. my gray is mostly in my temples [they're almost completely gray] w/some individual strand scattered thru out the rest.
i used to have a fairly dark brown haircolor, naturally - now it would be considered a dark blond.

Even before this economy thing, i've never had my hair coloured at the hairdresser, cut but never coloured. After hearing so many horror stories about the chemicals eating away at people and losing their hair, i decided not to attempt the professional job. I just do a very good job d.i.y, wipe up any spillage on skin before it dries, and use a mirror to make sure it's all done properly. Concentrate more on the roots, work from front to back.

What brand i buy depends on the pricing. But the last few applications i've been buying the Garnier 100% colour. Seems to do the job. The price is sort of mid range.

I have a friend who knows how to mix colors and dye hair.. he buys supplies at Sally's.. however when I cant get to his house and I have to buy a box, I like the Garnier Nutrisse too.. I expecially like the little packet of conditioner.. it leaves my hair healthy and shiny.

Oddly enough.. I get dandruff.. most dandruff shampoos do not solve the problem.. dying my hair resolves the issue for several weeks!

I've been using Colorsilk by Revlon for years. I got it initially partly because it said "no ammonia" and partly because it was about the cheapest thing on the shelf. I have to be careful what shade I use since my hair tends to go red. I even get red highlights when I spend too much time out in the sun. The Ash Blonde works well for me. I looked at their color list and they have an Medium Ash Brown but no Dark Ash Brown. Not sure what that means.

My hair has a natural reddish hue to it in certain lights (it's the Irish in me) and so if a color has any red in it at all my hair will turn very red. I also get red highlights in the sun.

*sigh* I need to dye my hair soon.. last time was shortly before I got pregnant..

I ussually get a brown color that has a hint of red to it.. I just like red hair, but not blessed with it myself. My BF has red hair, and my baby is starting to get hints of red in her hair.. Luck of the Irish to get pretty red hair I guess.

Your hair looks very nice!

If you do go back to the salon for color, remember you can always ask if they can reduce their price to keep you as a client. Most likely, the hairstylists are hurting, too, and are happy to charge less to keep you coming.

If your hair were longer, I would suggest that you get the color woven through your hair, that way you will never have the "line of demarcation" or grey roots like when doing an all-over color. (Seems the grey roots start showing a week after an all-over color.) The color-woven look is very natural and (with longer hair) you only have to have it done every 3-4 months.
