fifi1puss started a thread about what you have cut back on because of the lousy economy. I listed salon hair color and asked if anyone had and recommendations for drug store brands that do a good job with natural looking color.

She suggested Loreal Preference and Feria. Any other suggestions? I haven't colored my own hair in quite some time. Since I keep it short, it has to be cut pretty often and I would rather keep the cost of the color in my own pocket.

Thanks!!!

AB

ETA:, Oh, BTW - one of the reasons I do color is my grey hair!

I also like the Herbal Essense, never used the Natural Instincts, but when I want highlights, I get that Loreal two-tonal kit with the bleach in it as well. It always turns out nice.

L'Oreal was nice but plain. Not much bleeding on the towels.

Feria's color is the best I have used but I do lose a lot of hair when I rinse. It doesn't feel dry but makes me wonder. This does bleed a bit.

These are the two that just won't take in my hair. I found Herbal Essence smell to be over powering. They might have changed it since then though.

I think the NI is a non-ammonia rinse and won't take in my hair. I have "tough" greys.

Anyone try Garnier Nutrisse?

I use only Nutrisse or Feria, depending on what's on sale, currently I'm a bleach blonde and these are the only two that have managed the job on my dark auburn hair without leaving it orangey.

I've tried Garnier, and I liked it. I remember my hair smelled good afterward- not chemically processed... the little shampoo that comes with it leaves your hair feeling healthy. If I were colouring my hair, I would use Garnier again.

i use a semi-permanent color, Natural Instincts 02 Sahara. it pretty much just colors the gray, making it blonde.

I've always used "L'Image"

In fact I came here to post that I am colouring my hair right now, and saw this thread.

This is the colour I'm doing:

http://well.ca/products/clairol-limage_4855.html

It's gentle. My hair actually feels softer and looks shinier after colouring. And it covers grey very well.

Simple to use:

1. Poke holes in the tops of 2 tubes;
2. Add the tube contents to the bottle;
3. Shake well
4. Apply

Let it sit on your hair for 25 to 45 minutes depending on the strength of colour you want and how much grey you want to cover. I'm leaving mine on for 45 minutes.

Then rinse, apply the included hair conditioner and let sit for 3 minutes. Rinse and you're done.

I use Natural Instincts Sahara. It just brightens up my dark blond hair and doesnt cause breakage like other stuff I've used.

I don't usually colour my hair either. I used to faithfully, but then gave up. After about 4 years of not colouring it, I coloured it in the spring and again tonight. I got my hair cut today into a funky choppy style, and I had a box of colour in the closet so I decided "why not?"

Turned out pretty nice. I even coloured my eye brows.

Cool! Thanks for all of the input! My hair is naturally medium brown with red and gold glints in it. I was a chestnut brown as a girl. It doesn't matter what brown I use, I get a lot of red when the hair cuticle is opened up in the dying process. I would say I am about 30-40 percent gray, so I do need some color that works well with stubborn gray. (coarse wavy hair)

btw, if you do choose a semi-permanent color, leave it on for twice as long as they say [for example, mine says maxiumum 20 minutes - i leave it on for around 40 minutes]. helps 'get the gray' even better!
