Lucky had been a PURfect cat until yesterday, when I smoked a few cigarettes in the apartment... Yeah, I know, I was bad... I was very stressed out with my very sick grandfather in Brasil, and my mom who has been carrying that load on her back alone...
Anyway, bought a pack of cigarettes and proceeded to smoke in the living room. To make the smell go away faster, I opened the windows (the screen was on), and put my two fans facing out as exhausts. Well... minutes later I noticed she started to sneeze, so I figured it was allergies. About half hour later I caught her in the act!!! She was peeing on my area rug, under my coffee table, which is where I had my ashtray! What a BRAT!

Apparently she has been peeing there since yesterday - I noticed she didn't use her litter box at all today! To top it off, all the stores are closed today, and I need to wait until tomorrow to buy the enzyme cleaner... I soaked the spot with oxyclean, and rolled the area rug away - tomorrow I will soak it on the cleaner and leave it outside to dry... Ai Ai Ai!

The good thing is... I threw the cigarettes away after this well thought revenge - I guess she is saving me from cancer by peeing???
She is no longer sneezing since I stoped smoking, so that is good...

Already plugged in Feliway, and the spray is getting here tomorrow - also sprayed the whole thing with citrus extracts...

I know this is not really revenge... she was probably stressed out with the smoke? No Idea... poor thing! (and good lesson to me!)

The enzyme cleaner is super important. I heard that you should clean the area first with white vinegar to neutralize the odor, and then follow with the enzyme cleaner (saw that on TV today, actually).

I'd have her checked for a urinary tract infection (UTI) just to be on the safe side. It's pretty common for cats with litter box issues to have them. I would also make sure to keep the litter box clean (scoop everyday, or more if it's a covered box).

The cigarette thing is a new one, I've never heard of a cat reacting that way. It could just be a coincidence? I don't know, but I do know that a cat not using the litter box usually means that something is wrong. It's not something they do out of revenge, despite what it may seem

I wonder if the fans were on when she peed? My cat, Chloe, is terrified of ceiling fans and peed on my SO out of fear when he was holding her near one.

Yep - the fans were on for the first time as I was smoking.... Also the windows were open for the first time... and the cigarette.... I use Feline Pine as litter, and do scoop it up immediately every time she poops (I can't stand the smell!)

She is otherwise ok - eating and drinking well, etc... I will take her to the vet tomorrow to have her checked.

Thanks!

Bingo!!!!! I read your post, and decided to improvise a second litter tray for her with some cheap clay I had home (I ran out of Feline Pine)... and she peed IMMEDIATELY!!!
Not only peed, but pooped too!
The problem is that you don't throw away the Feline Pine all the time - you scoop the solids, and it neutralizes the urine (on the bottom of the pan)... I guess she was trying to tell me "Time to change the pine mommy!!!" Poor thing!
I never been so proud of her for simply peeing and pooping!
She was so desperate to pee that she didn't even care I was in the room with her... Bless her heart!

Tomorrow I will buy more Feline Pine, and the enzymatic cleaner too...

Thanks!

I am glad you are not forcing your kitty and her lungs to be exposed to cigarette smoke anymore.

hehe, this is actually a rather sweet story. I'm sorry that your kitty was upset about the smoking or the fan or the litter box (I am not sure which it was), but now you will know better than to smoke which is better for you and your kitty
