This is not a very pleasant subject, but my 6 month old kitten has got the WORST gas ever. It literally smells like rotten eggs.

I feed her 1 tablespoon of Eagle Pak Holistic wet food ONCE in the morning, and then she has her Eagle Pak dry food sitting out all day to eat when she wants. She eats the wet food right away, and munches on a bit of dry afterward, and dry a few other times throughout the day. Her 'gas problem' always starts around 6pm, and just keeps going pretty much all night. It's horrible. I literally gagged when I picked her up tonight and she let one rip. It was a SBD (silent bit deadly). I had to put her down and walk outside.

Is there any sort of medicine or anything out there for cats with gas? Do you think it's her food causing this? She does have a kitten cold, which she's had for a couple of weeks. The vet said she would have to ride it out. It seems to be getting a little worse since she's sneezing more often. But we did just bring home another cat, that has a cold too, so I don't know if she just got it from our new cat, or if she's still sick from her first cold.

Anyone have any suggestions, besides "Go see your vet!"

I know you don't want to hear "go to the vet," but it could just be that her anal sacs need to be expressed. This happened with Chandler Ray when he was about that age. We've been very lucky as he hasn't had that problem again and he is now 14. It's a very simple procedure and takes only a few minutes. If it is ongoing, you can be trained to do it yourself.

my Java had horrendous gas when i 1st got her [she was a stray/foundling - who knows WHAT she'd been eating!] & it eventually led to diarrhea. we went to the vet, of course - she was diagnosed w/an intestinal bacterial overgrowth. it took 2 rounds of antibiotics + a round of probiotics to get rid of.
she used to sleep on my shoulder - i think for the warmth factor, but the farting in my face wasn't pleasant

sorry - for something not food-related [it could be that, you know] a vet visit is the only remedy.

Oh boy. I actually DO know how to do it, as I am a dog groomer. I hate doing it, since the smell is God awful, but I'm almost 100% positive that this is gas, and not anal glands. I will have my vet check when she goes in to get spayed. Anal gland 'juice' (as I call it), smells more like rotten fish to me.

I should probably also say that she uses her litter box, A LOT. My older cat doesn't go a lot, but the kitten is in there about every 2 hours, either peeing or pooping.

Laureen, does Holistic food tend to cause a lot of gas? I will switch if I need to. I guess when she goes into get fixed, I will have her checked for anal glands, and for the intestinal bacteria. When she went for her first vet visit, he did say she had a bit of diarrhea, but wasn't sure if that was just because of him taking a fecal sample or not, and if she kept having runny poop, to come see him. But, she hasn't had runny poop.

The Eagle Pak dry is just the kitten formula. And she has been getting the whitefish & tuna? one for the wet.

never fed it... there are many causes for diarrhea, tho - food intolerances, various & sundry parasites, etc.

Well, she goes to the vet Dec 1st, so I guess I will just ask them to test her while she's there for her spaying.

Could be dietary - maybe she can't tolerate something in the food. Like Sharky said, some meats and many grains can cause kitties to get upset bellies. It could be stress, it could be a side effect of her "cold." I know your vet told you to ride out the cold, but you may consider supplementing with Lysine. I would ask your vet about this when you go in on the first. My kitties have constant sniffles and watery eyes and I give them Lysine mixed in with their wet food. Laureen does this mixed with water for her kitty. It helps tremendously! Lysine is an amino acid that helps kitty immune systems. It might even help her gas, but I wouldn't be sure!

It also could be any number of parasites, although you said your vet took a fecal sample? Did he just test for worms, or giardia and/or coccidia? It probably isn't giardia or coccidia since they tend to cause diarrhea rather than just gas, but if you can't figure out what is wrong with her than I wouldn't rule out those parasites.

I try to feed my kitties natural foods, but some foods are too rich and could be the culprit. Eagle Pack does make a probiotic/digestive enzyme supplement that one of the members here uses regularly for her kitties. She has had good results with it regulating her cats digestive tracts, so you might ask your vet what they think of probiotic type supplements. They could help your kitty also.

So basically here are a lot of things to mention when you go in to the vet to get her spayed.
Good luck, and I hope you can help her!

i have a kitten with the same problem and after doing some research i have found an alternative to save those vets bills.

probiotics is an alternative to antibiotics

antibiotics work by killing the all the bacteria in the liver these tablets are digested through the stomach or injected into the blood stream

probiotics work by increasing the 'healthy' bacteria and flushing the liver and intestines of parasites naturally, not as effective as the antibiotics but more of a natural remedy

i used 'OptiBac Probiotics for travelling abroad' available from most health food shops as a probiotic and provides 'healthy coating of probiotic bacteria in the intestines'

sprinkle one tablet into a full bowl of milk and feed to cat just do this once a week for a maximum of three weeks if needed

What are you feeding her?  Does she still have worms possibly?  Have you tried any probiotics as mentioned in the post above yours?

Hi...she gets blue mountain grain free dry kitten food. She has been de wormed 3 times and has a 14 day course of panacur which is supposed to kill all parasites. I am at my wits end.

Your cat may be having difficulty digesting something in the food that can cause gas.  Have you tried giving your cat probiotics?  Or digestive enzymes?  that may help.

And Panacur doesn't kill ALL parasites.  There are still a few that can remain, and they are hard to even identify, so most Vets aren't even aware the cats have them in their bodies.  They require a special test that has to be sent outside their offices to be processed.  (read - $$$$)

Why don't you start up a thread of your own and let's give us all the details of what's going on, ie just gas, gas and diarrhea, what the Vet says, etc.

You say that Gas starts at 6pm every day.

Right around dinner time, Are you sure someone in your household isn't giving her table scraps?

just an fyi,  there is a high percentage of cats that panacur is not effective with.  metranidazole is used instead.    my poor kitty had a parasite and they gave her a combo of both.     she still occasionally has gas and oh my is it awful.  i was glad to see someone post that certain meats in canned food can cause gas. my kitten is on a grain free diet.  it is just better for her.
