Has anyone else noticed the impatience that comes with the holiday season?

I have noticed a lot of rude people and not just during the holiday season. Ever smile at someone just to smile and get a dirty look back? I witnessed some impatient man in the grocery store who yelled at a couple who were blocking a whole aile with their grocery cart and he could have politely asked them to move instead of acting like a total jerk. I've also witnessed a man calling a cashier names and saying things that were very unkind and extremely sarcastic for absolutely no reason. People are just not as friendly and kind as they used to be.

After working Retail I hate Christmas... for this reason.

There's only so many times I can be yelled at about not having X in stock in your spawn's size when it's already on clearance and you should have bought it earlier. No, it's not my fault the others stores are out of it too!

And don't wait until the first big snowfall to look for snow boots for little Timmy! I'm sorry, but it's time to move in SPRING shoes! Argh.

Or when you have someone who NEEDS to see something that you only stock in the back and when you get it out of the (enormous) stockroom and down to their area they've left because you 'took too long' and you have to take it all the way back...

A friend of mine was told she had a 'dirty soul' the other day because she couldn't magic food stamps into existence for a woman who hadn't turned in any paperwork...
(But it's Thanksgiving!)

Gr. Call me a Grinch if you want, but this time of year is horrible.

AHHHH I LOVE the holidays in a grocery store. Its just going to get worse too.
Try working at Trader Joe's during the holidays/
I had to post to this thread; DH works at Aldi's (Trader Joe's is owned by the owners of Aldi) and he absolutely hates this time of year. Most shoppers are polite and try to stay out of the way of a man coming at them with a loaded pallet. Other's think the store was put there just for THEIR convenience, and everyone should stay out of their way. Some nights DH comes home and doesn't want anything to do with anybody. True, people can be insenstive jerks all thru the year, but the holidays just seem to bring out the idiot in some people.

I worked retail for a year, and I have a huge respect for retail employees after that. It's unbelievable how badly some people think they can treat employees.

I've been shopping at odd times since the "holiday shopping season" started. Although I swear it keeps getting earlier and earlier every year. Tuesday nights and Friday mornings have been working pretty well so far. Friday midday isn't bad either. The couple of times I ventured out near the mall area at normal shopping times were awful.

I work in a call center for a retail catalog division. I can't believe how rude people get. I get a charge out of the ones who wait till Dec 24 and want to know if we can get it there by Christmas. They get down right nasty with us. I hope and pray I can get out of that job as soon as I can! I am burned out after 5 years of rude and nasty people.

That reminds me of an incident when I was cashiering, in which a customer put his credit card on the belt: it slipped down underneath the belt before I could grab it, and the guy blew up at me and accused me of trying to steal it. WTH??!!
I wasn't the one who was dumb enough to put it on the moving belt!
Then he proceeded to tell me that he was a "born-again Christian", and he wouldn't stand there and allow me to call him a liar when I denied trying to "steal" the thing.
:

Oh, the stories I could tell!

I'm not a drinker, but when I was working in retail, there were plenty of nights I'd come home from work and have a stiff shot or two..

When I was working at a call center for a catalog company, peeps would call on Christmas Eve and want their Christmas cards by the next day - personalized, no less.
: When I tried explaining to them that it was impossible, they'd blow up and start cussing me out, and say things like, "Well what am I going to do now? Christmas is tomorrow and I have no cards to send out!" Whose fault is that?!

So, your patients have no patience.

I have the upmost respect for someone coming at me with a loaded pallet. I went to my Trader Joe's that same day, everyone was nice, staff and customers. I did weave in and out between some customers who seemed like they had never been in the store before but I always said excuse me and they didn't seem mad.

Of course, no one with more than 15 items went into the express checkouts which may have not been a pretty sight.

Make sure that DH brings home cheap chuck.

Well, I worked high end technical support and if the company was going live with the software by Jan. 1st, they were not happy before the Holidays when they had to try to get the software installed and running. Just like the catalogue persons calling up at the last minute, so did the software customers between Thanksgiving and New Years and I was working 20 hour days.

I order from mail order all the time. I always ask for a supervisor if the person taking the order is nice and takes the time to talk with me. Too many persons do not let anyone know that these hard-working persons have a clue about the products and customer service.

It's people like you who take the time to do that that makes it all worth it.
Whenever a customer would let my supervisor know that they appreciated what I had done for them, I would generally let them know how much I appreciated their kindness by either calling them to say thank you, or by sending them a thank-you card.

Huh? People are impatient ALL the time, it's just that during the holidays there's a higher concentration of them.

The media/marketing/etc also put tons of stress on people constantly reminding them that it's "the holiday season" and you have to "put stuff on your shopping list" and "give gifts". Try shutting the TV and radio off for the 3-4 months leading up to X-mas and you'll see how much more peaceful it is without someone breathing down your neck about buying stuff every 2 minutes.

I'm a ghost during the winter. Once deer season hits, I disappear into the woods keeping myself busy by thinning out the deer infestation. No unruly mobs, no cursing, no swearing, just me, my gun, and 2000 acres of hardwoods. Bad weather is even better since it keeps other hunters indoors and out of my range, and deer have to eat regardless of the weather. The rain/snow dulls their senses too and muffles my footsteps.

I could not be forced at gunpoint into a mall this time of year. I must admit to being kind of a Scrooge, and I hate this time of year. It is not the holiday, but the way people act during the season. I can't stand people that think they must buy gifts for everyone they have ever met, and then complain that they got nothing in return. It is all about "what I want for Christmas." Not to say most people are not sincere, but those are not the ones elbowing their way through Wal-Mart and the malls, brats screaming, parents yelling at them they will get nothing for Christmas if they do not behave, abusing sales people. Then they buy a mountain of junk that their kids no longer want when the next big thing comes out. Bah, humbug.

Thanks to you for being able to understand three of the most important retail things of the season. The first is to be nice to everyone. The second is to recognize that people who help you need some respect and you give it to them. The third is to let them know that you appreciate them. Then, their employer know that the person you dealt with went the extra 9-yards for you. It can be an employee appreciation form or a phone call or an email.

This season, we all could use a little kudoe.

We went to MicroCenter for Black Friday, and I have to say that overall it was a pretty good crowd. Of course, it's the kind of place and deals that the hard core computer geeks will go wait in line for, but not much else. They also opened the store at 8:00 instead of 4, 5, or 6:00. Of course, come checkout there were a couple of idiots. One woman had to RUN to the line, which landed her precisely right in front of us, who walked to the line.
Then there was some guy who was there to get a TV and had a voucher (meaning he was guaranteed the TV) who cut in front of a bunch of people and sidled beside us the entire way up to the check stands, as if getting in front of one more person would make a difference.

Personally I think the general feeling out there shopping anymore isn't "Merry Christmas" it's "
you, it's Christmas!"

Did you hear about the Wal-mart employee in NY who was trampled to death on Black Friday after the customers broke down the doors for the 5AM sales. Then the customers got angry because they had to close the store after the death because the Police were investigating. How uncaring can people be!
