My cat has always kicked way to much cat litter creating piles of it outside his litter box, is there anything I can do to teach him to bury his business gentler?

Toby does that. It's why I started using large storage containers for litter boxes. When he flings litter it stays inside the larger box. Using a storage box with high sides should help also.

I hope you find something that works. Having litter thrown all over the floor is no fun!

Harley does that all the time. I'll hear her scratching around in the litterbox, and the next thing I know, I hear the sound of mountains of litter covering my kitchen floor. Usually I ignore her, and go clean it up afterwards, but occasionally I'll go in there and tell her "that's enough" if she's getting really carried away.

I'm getting her a covered litterbox for Xmas and see if that solves the problem!

In the snow!!!!
My girls have a covered litterbox. They love to dig and kick litter. Most of it stays in the box, but some still occasionally gets out.
