Hello!!

I have been struggling for about a month with my about year old cat Rupert. He just got over a bad diarrhea issue and has since then been randomly making it or not making it to the litter box. This is frustrating me, as well as my roommate. I have been cleaning the litter box more frequently, completely sanitized the accident area multiple times and I don't know what to do. He is a really sweet cat, and I want to do all I can to help him! Please any information you can give me would be great!

Thank you so much!

What was the cause of the diarrhea and how was it treated?

What exactly is he doing? Is the problem peeing and pooping or just one or the other?

Has he ever consistently used the box?

When he goes outside of the box does he go near it? If so, that frequently means he wants to use the box but there is something he doesn't like about it.

Does he consistently use the box when it is clean and not when it isn't?

Are there other cats he has to share a box with?

What litter are you using? If it is scented *at all* he may not like it.

Have you tried Cat Attract litter? If he got out of the habit of using a litter box when he had diarrhea, this litter might help retrain him. It contains an ingredient that "encourages" them to use it. Can you confine him to a single room with a box of this litter to see if he will use it? He wouldn't necessarily have to be confined all the time. After you are sure he has gone you can let him out for a time.

I shall look into this "attract litter". I apologize for not looking a little more, and have found the thread that has to do with the accidents outside the litter box.

However, we do have another kitty in the household, but he uses his own litterbox in a different place. My cat is peeing and pooping outside the litterbox. The vet treated the diahrrea with a couple different medications as we had trouble finding the cause of the issue.

There was a point where I did not have a roommate, and he always used the litterbox before my roommate and their cat moved in. And continued to use the litterbox consistantly until recently.

Thank you!

If you still have problems after trying the tips in that thread, don't hesitate to post again.

It could be your roommates cat is bothering your cat now even if he didn't at first. If that is the case the Cat Attract probably won't help.

Good luck!

Is there any chance that the other cat is somehow intimidating your cat when yours is using the potty? I've had several dominant cats who love to play "Ambush at the Litterbox" - being the supreme hunters that they were created to be, cats can be very difficult to catch at stalking the other (I don't think it's deliberately being devious - just they are soooo subtle, except to other cats).
You might try adding a couple of different boxes placed at different locations and see if that helps. And be sure to use unscented litter and only vinegar or baking soda for cleaners - what is weak & diluted to us can be overwhelming & irritating to a cat.
Sending prayers & vibes that you find the right solution for you two very soon

Re the diarrhea, do you give him any diary products or cow milk? Cats are generally lactose intolerant and can get diarrhea from ingesting dairy products. You might also add some canned pumpkin (about a tsp. with each meal) to his food which would also help with the diarrhea issue. You need to make sure it is the pure canned pumpkin and not the pie filling with spices added.

I would also suggest an extra litter box in another area (or even two). The general rule is one litter box per cat plus one extra.
