Cats destroying wires

I have two sibling cats about 1.5 years old. They have wonderful, friendly personalities. They're sweet to guests, and they constantly follow me around and want to be near me when we're here alone. They are great cats, except for the fact that they keep destroying anything with wires. Here's a short list of wires destroyed in the past 2 months: cable modem cord (twice), headphones (4 sets), iPod connecting cord, computer speakers (2 sets), keyboard, mouse. None of these cords dangle. They sit flat on some surface. The severity of the damage has been from frayed wires to wires being completely chewed through.

While we're on the topic, they've ripped my sofa to shreds, along with my fake leather chair and everything else.

I don't know if this matters, but they never do this in front of me. The clawing on the couch they do, but all I have to do is look at them and maybe grunt and they stop. The wires they destroy when I'm either asleep, away, or, as in yesterday's case when they destroyed the mouse cord, in the shower. So it seems they know not to do these things, but do them anyway when I'm not looking.

In the early days, I tried redirecting their attention. If I saw them go to something they shouldn't mess with, I'd steer them towards a toy or a scratch post. As they got older, they continued the behavior, and I'd yell at them in the act. Sometimes I've resorted to hitting them while in the act, although I know that's not recommended. I've tried scare tactics, such as putting them up on the desk near my computer equipment and using something (such as a flimsy aluminum sign) to create copious noise and scare them. I've purchased two kinds of spray, one that tastes bad and one that smells bad. Not a single thing has worked.

As far as other things to do, they have an entire room in my 2-bedroom apartment all to themselves. The room has empty cardboard boxes, toys, a scratching post, and places for them to perch. In the living room is another scratching post and a miniature cat condo with scratching pad.

I should add that I never play with dangly toys with them. Their favorite toys are a drumstick and little mice toys, both of which are available at all times. I've never once taught them that dangly or wirey things are toys.

Is there anything I can do? I'm at my wit's end here, and am a day away from dropping them off at a shelter.

Thanks in advance.

We solved this problem by covering all the important wires (like the ones you mention) with wire conduit. It comes in different sizes (one is perfect for mouse wires, etc) and you can find it in auto part stores. Always available.

There are also some things you can do for "sofa destroying", depending on which area of the sofa they like to "work" on. Plus, there are alarms that might also work for you.

Thanks for your response.

I'd never heard of wire conduit so I looked it up online. Do you mean a thick, metal casing? Do you really have every wire in your house encased in that?

The sofa is completely shredded. They go at it from all angles. Sometimes they stand on the top of it and claw directly upwards. They claw anything that is at least semi-soft: suitcases, boxes, the bottom mattress of my bed..

The wire conduit I'm talking about is plastic, comes in a pretty blue and black. Auto part stores sell it in little plastic bags. You pick the size you need. It's perfect protection for wires.
It has a split seam that makes it easy to install or remove without disconnecting wires. And you cut it (with a pair of scissors) to the size you need.

Unless your kitties chew absolutely everything (all wires in sight) you can just use it for mouse wires and other delicate wires. Otherwise wherever you need protection for wires.

The sofa would need some ingenuity, if you're not ready to get rid of it. With some easy solutions it might still not look pretty enough to be featured in Architectural Digest or some other fine magazine LOL, but you could definitely prevent further damage. (PM me if you want to talk more about this.)

Okay, I'll try to find this for the more important wires on the computer. I live in Korea where they don't really have auto parts stores or sell many products at all, but I'll look around and see what I can find. But what about things like my headphones or the cord that connects my iPod to my computer? Let's say I've got that plugged in and I leave the room for a moment. In that short of time, the cats may destroy that wire. Many times they've destroyed things when I've just been in another room for a few moments. Is there no way to correct this behavior?

As for the sofa, it's already beyond repair. My apartment came furnished, so I've already resigned myself to the fact that I'll have to buy a new sofa when I move out (and replace the wallpaper and baseboards the cats shredded). But I'm wondering about the future. I've read some of the techniques listed on this site, but the cats have no "favorite" spot. There isn't a square inch on the couch that has not been clawed.

These cats are so destructive. They obliterate anything they get hold of when I'm not looking. Can anyone suggest behavior modification techniques for this?

I wonder why they are so bent on tearing up everything in site? I used those foam pipe insulators to cover my TV, Computer wires, etc . Not very attractive, but they are cheap and at least it saved my cat and the electrical equipment. If they don't sell them there , maybe someone in the US can send some to you? They are very lightweight so except for a long box it wouldn't take much to send. I don't know what to tell you about the small wires. I make sure I put my iPod cables, headphones out of reach when I leave the room.

Since your couch already is torn up, have you tried just covering it with blankets ? I guess that really wouldn't work on the sides, though
I have used double sided sticky tape sheets on fabric sofas that worked, but I don't know how well it would work on a leather-like sofa.

Good luck with your "koyongi"s
and I hope you are able to find a solution. Welcome to the site
