Indeed it was, and far more complex that I would have imagined just a few years ago. This story is particularly fascinating to me because it demonstrates just how far people will go to incarnate the myths they cherish.

I just wonder how much of these incredible things are lost forever to us because the cultists of other myths saw fit to destroy them

I'm sure there are many

However, it won't matter much longer since according to the Mayans we only have 4 years left!

I've read of quite a few, but there are probably many, many more small tribes and civilizations lost in time. The Christians were quite ruthless in their quest for domination.

I believe the Olmac's were an earlier civilization than the Mayan's.

I have read the Conquest of Mexico and The Conquest of Peru by William Prescott. Great books.

Human sacrifice was stopped and that is a good thing. But.........

Some people say the Mayan's are ancestor's of one of the Lost Tribes of Israel.

....and some people wonder why I love history so much.

Good stuff, Mike. Thanks for posting it.
