New Litter Problem

My 8 month old kitten, Junior, has just started peeing outside of the litter box.

This started.. roughly a week ago. We got him neutered on Nov. 5th, and what did he do? Promptly peed on a bag as soon as he came out of the carrier. Though I think that was because he was afraid to pee in the cage at the vet's, and we were cleaning the litter box at the time, so he couldn't wait.

He does not poop outside of the litter box. He just scouts around for an area, pees a little, and then pees somewhere else. He does pee inside of the litter box, too The urine is a clear school-bus yellow.

Does this sound like a urinary problem? We rather recently switched him from Wellness Holistic Kitten Food to Royal Canin Stage 2 Kitten food(the vet recommended it).. could he be having urinary issues from a difference in protein levels? We tried to get him an appointment, but the vet was full up for the rest of this week and next. Is there anything I can do to help him in the meantime? We wipe up his messes and put Natures Miracle on the spots, and we get him with the spray bottle when he's about to go.

Does Feliway help?

Yes, go straight to the vet. It sounds like a urinary infection (the small amount of pee and it's frequency). These can quickly become fatal if he blocks and cannot pass urine. It could be a result of the food change or it could be that he was recently neutered. All that is closely connected. If your vet can't see him find another one who can. This issue CANNOT wait and there's nothing you can do at home for him!

We are making him an appointment with the vet practice that sees my gerbils tomorrow. They have a 24hr emergency clinic.

Just make sure he IS peeing and that is bladder is not hard!!!! Blocked cats can die in 48 hours!!!!!!!! If he stops peeing RUUUNNNNN to the vet. I advise you take him NOW though.

My cat got blocked-so blocked that they ended up having to do PU surgery, basically making his male anatomy into female (females' bigger opening make it less likely to block)-was very $$$ They only do it in severe cases though, first they catheterize the cat for several days, then take it out to see if the cat blocks, and repeat if necessary. The total bill was around $1,000+ And of most of the members on here I have one of the cheapest vets, others have to fork over double or more of what I do for the same procedures.

Please consider taking him now, urinary issues are extremely painful for them. At least call the emergency vet and ask their opinion...

If it is something like crystals it can lead to blockage....

We went through the same thing with Hemmy. We caught his UTI and went to the vet where he still blocked under their care. He'd had many UTI's by that point and we all thought it was best to go ahead with the surgery. It was rough. I truly hope no one else ever has to go through that. Hemmy is very special and we're thankful for the fantastic job the vet did for him.

He may be associating the pain of the neuter surgery with the litter box. Or it could be UTI........... That's a BIG 'or.' I wouldn't take a chance, not after what I have seen. How has he been the last few days?

They keep us on our toes, don't they?
