He will see the vet in about 2 weeks and will need surgery if the crystals are still there. Why would they do surgery for crystals when he has no blocked?

I've never heard of that...

Surgery to remove the crystals or PU surgery? My cat had to have PU last Aug, and the vet explained it to me like this: PU is a very serious surgery and is only considered in severe cases. It DOES NOT REDUCE CRYSTALS AT ALL. The whole purpose of the surgery is to make the urethra wider so that the crystals will not block it. It is a LAST resort for blocked cats that do not respond to catheterization and medicines. My other option at this point would have been to pts.

It's pricey too, and I would never get it done unless if it was a absolute LAST resort. It's painful for cat, owner, and pocketbook. Even with pain meds my poor boy looked so pathetic, I even wondered if I was being selfish to put him though so much pain... it was really bad for 3-4 days, in fact I called the vet several times asking if he was OK to be dripping blood (vet said that is normal and expected), dripping pee (normal & 95% chance it will stop, and it did-after a week or two), the urine scald, and the redness of the surgery site was like something out of a horror movie... It took him over a MONTH to fully recover and most of that time he had to wear a stupid e collar since he kept liking himself raw which was preventing the incision from healing up properly.

No way would I do it. Tell her to get a 2nd opinion... I would be totally surprised if they suggested surgery too...

Unless if the surgery is to remove the crystals because they are large enough to block the urethra, that would make sense....

Maybe I should go with her when she goes to the vet.
I do not think he was talking about the type of surgery your cat had.

Ohhhh. Ok, thought it was a taaaad bit dramatic for this situation, lol.

Yeah, try going with her!

It does make sense to remove the crystals if they are lage enough to block the cat... but I would try diet/meds first to shrink the offending crystals first.
