I have a question....

It's really stupid, but I'm really stupid sometimes when it comes to government. Ok, McCain and Obama were both senators. So, did they quit the senate when they started to campaign for president? If so, how did they chose who was going to replace them, and if not did both IL and AZ hold an election for a new senator just in case? So is McCain still a senator for AZ?

I think I heard Biden would have still been the Senator if he'd lost. Not sure about since he didn't. McCain wasn't up for reelection, so he's back to work. No idea on BHO either, although he was MIA for the last two years I don't think he was up for reelection yet either.

If they stood for re-election of that seat (or were up for election) yes. I think McCain and Obama have some time left on their terms so were not up for election this year.

Biden won his seat back in the Delaware race

The governor in most states appoints the replacements. Biden was the only one of the four who was up for re-election, and he won it, and likely will be replaced by another Democrat because the governor is one. McCain goes back to being Senator from AZ, Obama back to IL until January and Gov Blagojevich will choose his replacement (he's also a Dem, so no net change in the number of Democrats vs Republicans).

I don't think it's a silly question. I wondered that a couple weeks ago myself.

I thought I heard Biden was still running for senator along with vice president. I was wondering about that as well. Iw onder if he can do both?

He was running for both-- had he lost VP, he would have gone back to being Senator (or if he lost both, nothing). He can't do both, the governor will appoint someone to serve as his replacement.

Would Sean Parnell (Alaska's lieutenant governor) have taken Palin's place if McCain had won? Or is that just an assumption?

Ok, well I'm glad I'm not the only one that was confused about that! So, the governor of the state replaces the senator. I guess the same thing will happen if any senators are selected for the cabinet or special positions. Ok, that makes sense I guess...I just wasn't sure how it worked.
