I just recently bought a litter box with out a lid (I am trying it out). All Tessie does is lay in it and then a few minutes later sprints out of it like she is crazy. She is using it to go to the bathroom but I have been scooping constantly. Is there something I can do so she stops laying in her litter box? Does anyone elses cat do this?
Thanks

How old is she? Flowerbelle used to do this until she was about a year old. We tried playing extra with her, but couldn't think of anything else to do about it, because we certainly didn't want to discourage her use of the litter box.
Thankfully, she finally grew out of it.
I'll be interested to see if anyone else has a suggestion that actually worked!

She is 4 years old. She only recently starting doing it when I got the open litter box. I may be switching back to the covered one and see if that helps.
Thanks

One of my male cats does that, Toby, I saw him doing it the other day, he was laying in it peeping out over the top to see if any of the other cats were passing by so he could jump out at them. Thankfully I just cleaned it out. I don't really know how to discourage that and still keep them using it the way they should.

Maybe just returning to a covered litter box will work. Or maybe the "fun" of the uncovered litter box will wear off in a couple of weeks.

I actually switched litter types (now I use The Breeze system, which has pellets that are supposed to be inert) because my asthmatic cat loved to roll in the clumping clay litter.

If I were you, I'd leave the box open for a while; hopefully, your cat will get over it. But they don't always do so. In my experience, cats don't roll in pellet litter, so that's another way to go. But I'd give your new box time for your cat to get used to it, first.
