I posted earlier this week that my boy Grigio had his teeth cleaned on Monday and the vet prescribed follow up with Clavamox. Grigio seemed fine and took the meds easily. Today (Wednesday), he suddenly threw up white foam and became lethargic. He lay in his bed, just staring, with the tip of his tongue protruding. I could not get him to respond to me, so I phoned the vet, and they told me to bring him in. By this time, he was also drooling.

They were great at the animal hospital, and the vet agreed with me that it must be a reaction to the Clavamox. The sudden change in this vibrant, healthy cat was truly scary.

I just phoned for an update, and they want to keep him for the night. The hospital is staffed at night with a DVM as well as techs, so I'm confident that he's in good hands. He seems to be responding (they told me that he was watching them, and that's my boy--he is usually curious and interested in his surroundings), and I hope this was just an allergic reaction. Anyone know of a cat who had a reaction to Clavamox?

I've had a few who were vomiting/had explosive diarrhea from Clavamox. Never had one react so extremely they became lethargic. Sending lots of your way!

Yes they can get that way.
Clavamox makes Coco throw up and get stomach pain so bad that she wont eat she can no longer have it.
She gets baytril instead now.

My vet has said that Clavamox has a lot more side effects than a lot of drugs. If you want more info you can research it on the internet, just search for clavamox side effects in cats. Good luck, hope he is good as new soon.

Im so sorry to hear about your kitty. I hope he is doing better now. Funny thing happening with my cat right now. She has a urinary tract infection and was put on Clavamox last Sat (she had this drug in 2011 with no problems) Anyway I noticed she vomited about 4 hours after getting it the first night. The next few days nothing happened until today. She vomited again after getting Clavamox and has been acting like she is sick to her stomach all day. Im thinking the last few days she must have tricked me and not really swallowed her pill because she hasn't vomited and I found one by the bed. Im a veterinary technician so always think the worst. I am not employed at this time so money is short. I called the vet and was instructed to stop the Clavamox, which I did. I was also able to give her some fluids under the skin. I will be taking her to the vet first thing in the morning. If she takes a turn for the worse then I will have to take her a few towns away to the emergency hospital. Im so worried. Did your cat seem to meow different when he was going through this ?
