What pet insurance plan do you have and are you happy with it?

Not sure if this is the proper place to post this, but I am in the process of researching pet health insurance plans for my 2 cats and 2 dogs. In addition to some of the insurance review web sites, I was wondering if anyone on this board uses pet insurance and how that has worked out for you? I'm particularly interested in how these plans have worked for people as their pets have aged or developed conditions such as cancer. Only one of our pets has anything that would be considered pre-existing, so I'd like to get insurance while everyone else is healthy and still young/middle aged. All of our animals are mixed breeds except one dog who is a pure Lab. I know sometimes this seems to matter when dealing with breed related conditions.

I guess I should have done a post search first - looks like some other threads have addressed this, but I'm still interested in hearing firsthand experiences from people whose pets have different American plans. From my experience, just putting the premium amounts into a savings account would not have covered the expenses for past incidents over the years. We dealt with two dogs who had cancer (now deceased), emergency vet visits for 2 allergic reactions (2 different animals), a ripped ear for one of our dogs, and several other non-life threatening, yet expensive treatments over the years that likely would have been covered since they were not pre-existing conditions. This has amounted to thousands of dollars which we have willingly paid, but I'm starting to wonder if we wouldn't be better served having insurance because with our luck, the next incident is just around the corner. Oh and we do all the preventative care and proper nutrition, so its not that we don't take care of our animals, we've just had bad luck with illnesses. I'm just trying to be more proactive in planning for the future here.

We have never bought pet insurance, but luckily all of our pets have been relatively healthy. All of them have died of "old-age" issues and have lived to mid-teens. One of my dogs who is now at the Bridge had some major issues - cardiac and epilepsy - but we adopted her as a somewhat older dog and she was also a puppy mill survivor, so we knew she would not be in perfect health. The tests were costly, but the drugs were not since they were generic.

I am in the process of adopting a cat now (my tabby boy went to the Bridge a few weeks ago) and I have met three cats who are 12 weeks to 1 year old. I am seriously thinking about getting insurance this time, partly because our luck may run out (though I pray not, it is pretty much out of our control) and partly because it much less expensive when the pet is younger. Also, animals are exposed to so many toxins even when we try to be careful about their enviornment and their diet. I would imagine having the insurance would buy some piece of mind, but I still plan to have my savings fund to fall back on should it become necessary.

I'm leaning toward PetPlan USA because it looks like even the basic plan covers cancer treatments and breed specific conditions up to $8000 a year. Does anyone on the board use PetPlan? I know it has been in the UK for a while, and now has a USA policy.

Is anyone familiar with/happy with Pets Best Insurance? They seem good, fairly priced, and straightforward, but after doing a quick search of the message boards, I haven't seen a single person endorse them.

Any feedback RE personal experience with Pets Best will be great. Thanks!
