The internet advice worked.
I took off the panel below the door, unscrewed the "thingy" (looked like a gas cap) and a small felt marker, at least that are what the parts looked like. came along when removing the empty filter. I then took one of my handy dental picks that has a bit of a hook on it and pulled out a wad of fibers.
Looked oddly like remains of all those sweaters I washed for a felting project (which will now be washed at a laundremat).
Put it back together and ran a test load and it drained great!!
So I did a load of towels and no problem!!
So hopefully thats the end of that problem.
This fix was for a Kenmore front loader (same as Whirlpool Duet).
Think I saved myself a repairman visit.
