Hi! I have just got a new kitten who was described as black when we bought her. However, she doesn't look very black to me! She is very dark brown with faint tabby markings and a grey undercoat. She is gorgeous and i want to know if she will stay this colour. Her mum is a grey tabby and dad, who knows! Maybe this is just what black kittens all look like, i have no idea! Can anyone advise?

She's black. However when a black cat sits in too much sun, they sometimes "bleach" out to a brown-reddish kinda of color. Or if they have a chocolate or burmese cat in the background you can get "off" shades of black.

I had a black smoke cornish rex. Mom was tortie, her dad a chocolate smoke. Genetically she was a black smoke; but in the summer she would shed out and have a chocolate color on the tips of the fur. And this cat did NOT sit in the sun. She had off color paw pads too. We think she was a 1/2 black 1/2 chocolate cat. She did this for years (color change). Took awhile to decide if she should be registered as a black or chocolate.

She was never show in the summer cause her coat changed color. In winter she was a black smoke - in the summer a chocolate smoke.
