Both Belle and Delilah have done the same thing since I got them when they were 9 weeks old. They are 8 months old now.
When they are purring, their breathing is really heavy. If they are lying down on one side, the whole side of their body "thumps". They don't seem to be in any distress, and their breathing goes back to normal as soon as they stop purring (ie. if they fall asleep).
I mentioned it to the vet during our first check and he didn't hear anything abnormal with their breathing. Before they got spayed, they did an ECG as part of their pre-op testing, and nothing abnormal came up.
Both cats eat, drink, play, and sleep like normal. Belle occasionally breathes with her mouth open, but isn't struggling for air and quickly closes her mouth and breathes through her nose again (it's like she wants to say something but can't spit it out!). I've never noticed Delilah breathing through her mouth. I notice the thumping more in Belle, as she constantly purrs, and purrs loud!
I'm not overly concerned about this, but I was just wondering if anyone else notices their cats breathing heavier when they are purring.
