Hello:

Frist I want to help everyone here who has gave me wonderful advice about food for my kitties. I've learned so much, I'm so glad I joined this site.

Lucas was diagnosed with acne and I've done everything I could do to yhelp him and nothing is working, the last thing I did was change his food to wet and he hates it.

No I'm thinking Lucas doesn't have acne,. I think it is food alergies, I think dry food is making him sick. His face is all red, his ears are red, his eyes get red and his eyelids get swollen. He also has acne-like blaxk heads around his mouth and in his neck. I'm gouing crazy. I'm taking him to another vet this week.

What I'm thinking is I should give him homemade food, I wanted to try natural food, but I can't find it here in Puerto Rico and I'm desperate. I found some nice recipes and I was thinking of doing that, but at the same time I"m afraid Lucas won't get all the nutrients he need. OMG this is so hard
I love my baby so much!

First, I would work with your vet to try to figure out if it is a food or environmental allergy. It can be very frustrating and can take a lot of time trying different meds and foods. Also transitioning a cat to a wet food diet from a dry food diet can also be a challenge! I'm trying to do that right now with one of my cats and he's quite stubborn.

One book that I have found very insightful is this one --- Dr. Pitcairn's New Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats. It has great info on making homemade foods for your pets.

But, again, I stress working with a vet to figure out what might be the cause of the allergies - since food might be only one component to the problem.

I'm sorry you and Lucas are going through this. Hope you find a solution soon!

As long as you feed bone, meat and organ in the same proportions as a prey animal your cat will get all the nutrients he needs. You can read more about that on this website: http://www.rawfedcats.org/

It is a good thing to read about raw diets and ask all questions beforehand, including how to transition a cat, there is an email list on yahoo where they can explain everything really well;

I hope your visit to the vet turns up something helpful so Lucas will feel better.

If you feed a cooked diet then you will have to add a calcium supplement and a cat multivitamin and mineral supplement. With cooked you would feed meat and organs.

For raw, just like Mimosa said, Meat, bones, and organs (mainly hearts and livers) has everything a cat needs.

Also, don't forget that feeding cats is not a exact science. As long as a cat gets everything they need within a reasonable amount of time they will be fine.

Variety, if you can, is good. So as many meat sources as you can feed. Egg yolks are a healthy supp every so often. Omega 3's helps too.

Take care

Thank you all for your help. I'm still trying to decide what to do. I'm taking Lucas to the vet again this week. I'm running out of options. I tried giving him a little bit a chicken the other day, just to see if he would eat it and he didn't even touch it. he is very picky!!! Yesterday he looked really bad, his eyes were so red and his eyelids were swollen.
