Hi! I have just got a new kitten who was described as black when we bought her. However, she doesn't look very black to me! She is very dark brown with faint tabby markings and a grey undercoat. She is gorgeous and i want to know if she will stay this colour. Her mum is a grey tabby and dad, who knows! Maybe this is just what black kittens all look like, i have no idea! Can anyone advise?

Hi, welcome to TCS !

A picture of her and/or her mom might be helpful.

Black kittens can have tabby "ghostmarkings", most often they fade with age, some cats keep them forever. With some cats the color goes deeper down the hair than with others, but what you describe as grey undercoat might also be "smoke". (especially if the mother is a silver tabby, if that is what you mean by grey tabby)

Awww, Millie and Ruby are both adorable.

A member with more expertise than mine, will certainly come along soon, who can help you with Ruby's coat color.
I would call her coat color, beautiful.

They are both beautiful. Wyatt, my black and white cat (now crossed over), in the sunlight you could see red; he was long-haired. You could also see some gray undercoat when petting him. Sammy (also crossed over) was mostly black, but short hair, looked like velvet.

Aww... you have very cute kitties! Unfortunately (or not) Ruby will probably end up being an ordinary black cat. For reference here's some pics of my fluffy black boy.

As a kitten he was a chocolate brown with black points.

As a little man kitty he's all black with what looks like a dark grey undercoat.
