Hi

Clive is 15. Had an acute case of vomitting and diarrhea. The ER started him on flagyl on saturday - he has 3 doses left. He is also on prednisone, but I give them to him at different times and it just seems like the flagyl is causing him to be more lethargic and worse than before he takes it.

He has been to his reg vet and returns on monday for retaking of bloodwork.

Thanks

My cat Kingston was on metronidazole (Flagyl) earlier this year and he had gotten worse on it and my vet told me to stop giving it to him. You might want to call your vet and let them know.

Riley took Flagyl for his recent illness (vomiting, diarrhea, not eating) and it helped him. Maybe your cat is allergic? I would call the vet.

i am waiting to hear back from them, thanks everyone. he is better now, it's within the first few hours of taking it... his mouth foams right after i give it to him and then he hides and looks totally out of it.

Metronidazole is an antiobiotic that is usually instructed to be given with food because it's quite hard on the stomach. It's also extraordinarily bitter.

Get in touch with your vet and let them know the your cat is having trouble with it. They may advise giving it with another drug to protect the stomach (ranitadine or omeprazole) or switching to another antibiotic that's a little more stomach friendly.

Flagyl can cause stomach upsets in cats and humans. It makes me sick and the doctor gives me alternatives.

Riley was given a chewable chicken version of it. He still would not just eat it, so had to be pilled with it anyways, but it was not awful and didn't make him foam at the mouth, etc. Maybe you can ask your vet about this version?
