"Probably no God" ads on London buses

Atheists in London were apparently offended by banners on buses claiming that "non-christians will burn in hell", and have campaigned for funds for their own ads. And, have been successful far beyond their expectations.

Fair is fair. If the believers can advertise then the non-believers should have the same rights IMO.

Sounds fair to me.

Politics wasn't enought for you, huh Skippy? You just had to start a religious thread.

I'm not really all that into election politics. I'm still planning on writing in Ellen DeGeneres Ellen for President

As for this one, I was just amazed at the amount of support the Guardian obtained for this.

That's awesome!! I wonder what they'd do if both buses had unexplained mechanical problems and couldn't drive for most of the 4 weeks?

Oh wonderful, i'm in London this weekend as well

I agree with Linda, they have every right to voice their opinion, but a banner on a bus won't sway me

It won't for most people. But you know me, I'm big on the Social Justice side of things, and I thought it was pretty awesome.

I laughed out loud when I read the ad I even printed it out and it is hanging at my desk
post #11 of 31
Someone sent that to me a while ago - I love some of their donor's names
post #12 of 31
Even if the atheists don't believe in God, God still believes in them
post #13 of 31
I joined the facebook group for that! I hadn't realised it had so much support
I doubt it will change anyone's opinion, but I doubt the religious ads made any difference either. TBH I would hope that a person's religious belief isn't changed by an advert.
I read in the facebook group that they had to include the 'probably' to avoid offending religious people. I prefer how it is now anyway, its more light-hearted, which it should be.

God doesn't need to believe in me- I know I exist

Actually, at the risk of offending atheists; I would think that "probably don't exist" is the most certainty one can give to the subject. Until (if) we ever develop the technology to search every millimeter of every nook and cranny of the universe and whatever is beyond, there is no real way to say "absolutely not"

and an atheists would counter with: .....there is no real way to say "absolutely so".

why not? those that believe in God can say that he absolutely is there, so why can't I say that he is absolutely not? It has never been proven scientifically so it's all about what you believe That's why some of us are atheists and some are agnostics, agnostics generally believe there might be something, but atheists absolutely do not

to me, it's kinda like aliens, lots of people think they might exist and some people think they don't, neither are wrong until there is irrefutable proof

Oh, I completely agree. If I had to title myself, it would be Agnostic, with a slight leaning toward Deism on the "just maybe" side

Interesting, though, that they had to tone it down but the other ad was actually very offensive. I wouldn't want to see anything saying I was going to burn in hell - non existent or not, it's the thought behind such a comment that counts. You only say that sort of thing to a person if you hate them...
I was offended the time someone on here said that about atheist and agnostics - though I think the mods deleted the whole thread since I haven't been able to find it again.

If you look at the group's campaign/donation site there are some funny comments.
They've gathered quite a bit of money, and hopefully with this story circulating and more of the public becoming aware of them they'll get more donations. Maybe groups elsewhere will follow suite!

I'm a lazy atheist. I don't believe in a god, but I only get definite about it after reading a Richard Dawkins book, or when people try to convert me

I say 'probably', but only because its true. The funny thing is, if I'm right then none of us will ever know

I'm not sure that the ad itself was offensive as much as the website it advertised. But either way it does seem to be a bit of a double standard.

I long ago came to the conclusion that you can neither prove nor disprove the existence of a deity, and I personally have no fear of "Judgment Day", because mankind is perfectly capable of creating Hades right here on this planet and of destroying the world without any kind of divine intervention.

As to aliens - my mother thinks Jamie's one.

that is kind of funny. I don't feel it is offensive so I have no problem with it. its only fair right

Does that mean that no obama pics are allowed?

Of course they are. Being fair and giving everyone a voice is what we were discussing. But, if Obama is your God, you have to pay for the ads on the buses.

Well, it would seem that The Guardian has raised nearly enough money to go national with their bus ad campaign. Money is coming in from all over the world
post #27 of 31
For one I would like to see the opposite ad on the bus. All they show is the atheist one.

If indeed they were saying that non christians will burn in hell, then that sounds fair to me.

I like how the atheists are like "relax" and Christians are like "you're going to burn in hell!" hmmm..Why do I not believe in religion again? lol...Cause it's so funny! Everyone judges like god, and yet that's supposed to be a sin. Interesting and stupid all at the same time.

The only thing I believe in is the cuteness of my cats.
Everyone has a right to have their say so its perfectly fair. My religious beliefs are complex and can't be explained on the side of the bus but I get why they have them there.

Technically, if god exists, then wouldn't he/she/it be an alien anyways? (aliens being anything not of the earth)
