Personally, I find this idea appalling and potentially dangerous. But in the comments on the news page, some seem to think it would be a good idea to help lower taxes. I think it would be a terrible idea because it would distract drivers and teach them to ignore road alerts. Also, just because the government gets its hands on a new revenue stream doesn't necessarily mean they're going to let go of or reduce others. I don't live in California, but I hope this gets squashed FAST so it doesn't gain a foothold there and spread around the country.

I don't think it's right. They are very distracting and I think that if someone looks at one of those signs they are expecting important information and not advertising.

Actually I was annoyed at a similar sign being used for political advertising around here. You know those portable "expect delays" signs? Well someone got hold of one and put it in front of their business to push for some local politicians. I think it is crummy. It blinks at you at night in the dark and is very distracting. I asked the cops if it was legal and they said it was - anyone can go get one of those signs and use it for whatever they want. I don't think it's right. If it looks like an important traffic sign then that's the only thing it should be used for IMO.

Bad idea. It's even worse than those dumb advertising blimps that appear in the air every so often. I never liked them. You know they are just advertising, but they take your attention anyway. This idea is even worse, because it uses what is supposed to be a safety/emergency system, and eventually its original purpose will be ignored.

I agree with others - very bad idea. People are distracted enough with all the other things they do these days while driving (like cell phones). There has to be a different way to generate revenue for the state.
