This is my cat Mai, she is the best cat and also my best friend.

She was a stray who showed up in my garage and she had ear mites. When my vet spayed her he treated that and one ear was fixed but the other ear always had the black discharge that looked like mites.

Well almost 2 years later, 3 vets later, and lots of of money later it was actually a polyp, and she just got home from the vet today. The surgery and everything that went with it was about 800 dollars. The vet needs to see her in a week, that will be another 400 dollars minimum. I am nearing the end of my resources money-wise, as I am a musician...I make enough to live but not enough to shell out that much money regularly as my house takes up a large portion of my pay-check.

The vet said there is a 50% chance that this will fix it but after researching ear polyps it sounds like it will just come back and the % of success is much lower...I am really hoping that is not the case. My first question is, has anyone had a cat with a polyp where a non-invasive laser removal fixed the problem?

So after research I see that the other surgery, which the vet mentioned but did not go into detail about, is between 1500 - 3000 dollars where they cut through some nerves to remove a piece of bone in her ear and this has a very high rate of success and is what most of the websites suggested. I am really trying not to worry because I do not want Mai to pick up on that energy while she is healing, but I don't even want to think about it because I don't make that kind of money, though if it could wait I might save it in a year or more. But that;s hard to do with vet bills like these.

My second question is does anyone know of any agencies that help lower income people with pet bills? I asked at the vet if they had a payment plan and they gave me a form for a extremely high APR rate credit card...

I apologize for lurking here and only asking questions when I have problems, I know that is not good etiquette...

I'm sorry that your baby isn't feeling well

I found these links about ear polyps

By the sounds of it, a "simple" removal which involves just cutting off the surface, isn't a permanent solution in most cases:

The problem with simple removal is that if the base (source) of the polyp is not removed, then 50% to 75% of the polyps will reoccur in 1 to 8 months.
