I opened the kitchen door and looked down and there was the end of a mostly-smoked, hand-rolled cigarette on the deck in the back of the house.

We live at the end of a dead-end street. Our yard is fenced in on three sides (partially fenced in the front); so whoever left this walked from the front yard to the back yard and up our deck.

Upon closer inspection, the cigarette had green tobacco instead of brown, if you know what I mean.

It kind of creeps me out; the kitchen doors to the deck are glass (French) doors. The person could see that people live here... the person could also see if I'm up and getting a drink of water during the night.

Usually the back yard is very dark, but there was a bright moon. Kind of creepy and definitely irresponsible to leave it on a wooden deck.

Weird, huh?

That is creepy. Put some motion lights back there, maybe that will deter someone from hanging around.

That's a good idea. I would get something like that too.

Very creepy.

It's probably a neighbor or someone you know-- still creepy, but they were there to hide from the sightline of their own house (spouse? parents?). Especially since it's so fenced-off.

I agree, a nice motion light would prevent it from ever happening again. Or even a little No Smoking sign strategically placed, or a light left on. If it seems like they might get caught, they won't come back.

They were most likely just looking for a quiet spot where noone would catch them. Seems your deck was the spot.
The inner college student in me says "why would you leave a roach there, you can break it up and reuse it".
Get some motion detector lights, Dad used to have stoners on our porch all the time till he got the lights.

maybe someone in your house smokes and you just don't know it. I know people who do that with their family.

It was probably high school kids who snuck back there to smoke it. We've had that happen here too.

It's creepy, yes, but I'd be more freaked out if it had been a regular cigarette. Probably the only reason they smoked it back there was to smoke the joint, not to spy on you.

That would creep me out too. I think the motion detector lights are a great idea. as soon as a light comes on they will leave.

Yes, please, motion-activated lights -- right away! And if you have an old video camera, you could mount it high in a window, aimed as if you were actually shooting the door area.

When I lived in apartments, I used to make realistic-looking signs to glue into the windows (so they looked like decals) -- "This property under video surveillance," with a fake security company name and address along the lower edge. :-)

I agree with one of these as well. My nextdoor neighbour has one on his house, but even if someone comes into my back garden it lights up

The ex-stoner in me thought the same thing, lol, who would waste a perfectly good roach?
I would not be too creeped out, no doubt they were just looking for a dark secluded spot and meant you and your family no harm. Still, I agree to go with the motion lights, its a good idea to have anyway if you are in a dark area.

They probably left it because - a) It is so dark back there. The person dropped it or set it down then couldn't find it. and/or b) probably thought they heard someone inside and ran off in a hurry.

I need to take my own advice on the motion lights - no creepy neighbors in my case, but the house DH and I just bought has a lovely large covered deck out back with a garage/shop and driveway where we park. It is very dark back there at night - even with a full moon. I nearly fell on my face a little while ago leaving.

Just make sure you get the correct height for the motion sensors. You don't want animals to trip it, or in the case of a neighbor - anything that passes on the street in front of their house (note the house is not set that close to the street).
