I think Marley many have been trying to cough up a hairball tonight. He was coughing but nothing came up. He did it about 5 times then stopped. Is there something I should use as a preventative measure to lessen the frequency of hairballs, or to get rid of them??

Also, how concerned should I be when he eats grass and pukes??

I also gave him some tuna water the other day, bout 1/4 of a cup or less and when he was done, he acted like he was going to throw up but never did, just made some gagging/coughing sound for a few minutes.

He acts fine and is playful and eating. And for those of you who read my post about how I thought he was having trouble peeing, he's not. I've been watching him the last few days and he is fine.

All this pukey/coughing business has me a little worried.....

Hi
Everything you wrote sounds like pure normal cat to me

You can get a product called vet basis or some slippery elm. That should help some

Not at all. You know you can buy cat grass or even grow your own!

Who knows if it was the tuna juice or just drinking too fast or even just coincidence
I would 't worry

He acts fine and is playful and eating.

That's what matters. Just watch the 5 p's peeing, pooping, purring ,playing and I will let someone else give you the 5th or you can guess! It starts with pr
Good luck.

Please keep an eye out ... ie the potty box should have some "hairball' like thing ....

Please see the vet ASAP if he repeated gags without something coming up , he could have a blockage

Fiber aids hairballs ie the grass ( some cats will puke it others wont ) , wet food will help , I prefer slippery elm but many prefer convience of a gel( vet basis is my preference as well others like laxatone)

My boy (recently adopted) was having a hacking cough that didn't bring up anything, and I was concerned about possible asthma or something "stuck" in his throat. I took him the vet who said he was fine, and told me that when it happened again to check the litter box later on to see if there was hair in the stools.

He has only coughed like that once more in the past two weeks, but sometimes I think it's because he's trying to get up something he's picked up that he eventually swallows because he has the awful habit of chewing on anything he can find. He's 5, so he should have outgrown this, it seems to me. My former cat adopted me when she was a year old, and although she investigated everything, she didn't try to eat from the floor. This guy tests everything in his mouth! Recently I must have missed one of those packing styrofoam "peanuts" because I found one thoroughly chewed.

I use just plain old Vaseline Petroleum Jelly instead of an expensive hairball remedy. It's odourless and tasteless and it's safe to consume. I just give about 1/2 teaspoon weekly and that helps them pass the hairballs out the other end.
