Are any of you planning to get a flu shot this year?

I get one every year and this year will be no different. I had the pneumonia vaccine after I had pneumonia last year. Almost did me in, spent 10 days in the hospital and took me 2 months to recover enough to go back to work. The p-vac is supposed to be good for a few years.

I don't get flu shots. My work offers them for free and I turn them down every year. I haven't had the flu for over 15 years(knock on wood). I catch an occasional cold.

I get one every year. I go to the doctor next month and he will probably ask me. DH should be getting one too.

I've had one ever since I had my stroke in 04.

It was my pulmonologist that recommended I get the pnemonia vaccine (he knows what's going on with the dys. and still suggested I get it), so I'm going to go with him on that one. First time I had pnemonia, I almost died from it and was really sick for a very long time, so if this may potentially help prevent such a bad reaction to it, I think it's worth a shot!
(literally
)

The cardiologist and pulmonogist both wanted me to get the flu shot (and i've had that one in the past) so i'm going to get that one too. I still am waiting to get in to they dys. specialist so in the mean time I want to go ahead and get vaccinated....especially since I ALWAYS get the flu when I don't get the shot and i'm around my sister's kiddos soo much!

I'm also getting blood drawn. BOOOOO! Anyone ever gotten sick from getting the shot or felt a little bad afterwards? Or no big deal for me to worry about?
The only time I've ever had a reaction to the flu shot was a few years ago and I just had very very mild symptoms. All the other years i've had it, I haven't had any problems at all. Your arm might be just a little sore for a day or so though. Keep in mind they change the vaccine yearly to try and match it to the circulating flu viruses since they change as well. It's not a 100% gurantee you won't get the flu, but chances are if you do, you won't die from it or get very ill....a lot of times if you do get a different strand, you have much milder symptoms that you would have without the shot....so in my opinion, it's worth it...but ask your doctor!

^ Just remember the dys sets you up for the possibility of weird reactions to the strangest things. I don't know if you're done any reading about chronic fatigue syndrome, but some think it's just another manifestation of the exact same problem since so much overlaps as far as symptoms go, this includes the weird allergies and sensitivities.
I've read crazy stories of people have anaphylatic reactions to contrast dyes - scary stuff.

I'm lucky in that I tend not to have anything too weird happen medication wise - but I'll have to mark percocet off the lists of meds I can take. It causes some weird symptoms and vomiting. That effectively leaves me without pain control since nothing else touches serious pain. Three meds added to that list in two months, oh well.

And I have had pneumonia before, too, but it wasn't viral in nature. The bacterias (and fungi) that can cause serious infection often normally live in your sinuses. In which case, the sinus washes everyone promotes are an even bigger help then realized.

I fully agree!

I don't think I have ever got the full blown flu - I'm not susceptible, I'm not in any high risk categories, and if I get sick, I can lie around complaining for a few days without causing too many dilemmas.

I also think there's so many strains out there and it changes so much over the season anyway that it's pointless.

Yup I got one in early September. When you work with the public (in mass amounts) you can't be too careful.

Last year was my first flu shot, and it's the very first year I can remember that I didn't sick at all. Sometimes what you think is just a cold, is actually a low flu.

this year there was a tiny bit of a reaction. just some redness, and itching. not sure if i can blame the slight cold on it...

Emergen-C powder is a god send!!!!! Please try it for your own good. It is my weapon against getting sick.

Not quite following you on that one hon, are you saying that there dyes in the vaccine that you know of?? I'd be interested to find that out!

I've had contrast dye before on about 8 different occassions for different scans/etc and never had a problem from those thankfully. (Now I have heard stuff on some of the medical shows on tv about it causing issues for some people though so I understand what you're saying!)

I'll have to give those sinus washes a go! How often are you supposed to use them?

^Not in the vaccines, no. Just mentioning how for some it can cause terrible reactions. In the average population, though, nothing happens.

Nope. Never had one, never will have one. I even worked in a daycare for 2 years and still never got the flu. I DID get the stomach flu but in the summer and EVERYONE got that. I work in a dental office-my second year here-and still won't get one.

Stomach flu isn't actually a sort of flu - it's gastroenteritis which is usually caused by a virus that causes inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. It seems that "stomach flu" is an American thing - everywhere else it's called gastro or just a tummy bug.
