Is 9" the national standard? I mean mattresses for humans, not kitty's

I don't know about 10" mattresses, but what about a pillow top those can add a lot of inches. =)

Yes, they do, if you're willing to look.

Probably more common in foam, though.

oh man if you can afford it get one of those memory foam toppers. Those things are HEAVEN!
I LOVED mine until a certain mostly white cat peed on it... I miss it bunches

^ Get another topper off overstocked.com and make sure to put a cover over it. DH and I have unfortunately spilled drinks and soup in bed (I can't always get out of bed to eat) and that's kept our topper from being ruined. Anyone who's a klutz, owns pets, or has allergies/asthma should use a cover anyways.

In general though, those toppers help but you need a good bed under them.

I don't know about 10" mattresses but I was sitting on some that had to have been a foot thick or more the other day - with pillow tops though.
Go to a furniture store and ask, take a tape measure in case they don't know and don't mind you measuring the beds.

i got a new mattress this year. it's a memory foam mattress - i just went & measured it. it's over a foot thick...

When hubby and I were looking for mattresses, we actually found one that was over 15" thick. When you get over a certain height of mattress, you actually need special sheets to fit it which is kind of a pain. We ended up with a nice mattress that didn't require special sheets.

^Or stairs to get into. Depending on where one lives, maybe chrome side rails would be appropriate for the over sized beds. (don't mind me, I think I've officially lost my mind tonight)

I could think of some uses for chrome side rails....

My mattress is, and it has an extra mattress about 3" thick stitched on top for added comfort.

Around $900 for a decent bed is about right. It's what DH and I are expecting when we buy a new bed sometime this week. Speaking of that, I need to get together so we can go by the other furniture store this morning!
