Well I was looking around (putting off my homework) and I ran across a place seeing cat trees and bed for much more money then I can spend on them.

That said I would love to make a place for my cat, I have a feeling he would like something inclosed, but aside from that, I don't know. I'm thinking a good play to start would be with a cardboard box...maybe glue on more for support...and I believe I have some pieces of carpet I could use...Aside from this I'm not sure where to go with it. I could spend some money on it, but it would have to stay under $30...

Has anyone tried this? Am I barking up the wrong tree? Or does any have any ideas or heights and widths for me?

ooh this is perfect! I even have one of these from when I moved. Any suggestions for what to put inside? should I look into a blanket or just go with the carpet?

i made a "castle tower" for my cats about 3 years ago. it's about 4ft tall and got 3 levels. i made it out of sturdy cardboard boxes and cut out openings on all levels. i covered the different levels with carpet and some cheap peel-off tiles. i made papermache from newspapers and covered all the outside of it and painted it gray. the top-level edge i 'crennelated'. i screwed the whole thhing on a piece of left-over drywall so it wouldn't tip over and i put the peel-off tiles on the bottom of the drywall so it slides really easy over carpet or tile floors. the only cost i had was for the tiles. the other stuff i had. but with 9 cats it's starting to look like a castle ruin so i'm going to have to replace it pretty soon.

i have a cardboard chewer, so i wouldn't have much luck w/a cardboard tower.
i made a mini-tupperlair using 2 rubbermaid/sterilite tubs. i got one of the hot knives like Skippymjp used to cut large diamonds into the sides. here's what my results look like:
