Hi,

I have two rescue cats one 4 years, one 18 months both had since kittens.

These 2 'tolerate' each other and play fight sometimes, they don't snuggle together or anything like that but do get along fine - but generally my 4 year old likes to lounge around, hates being pestered by the 18 month old and hissies or runs away when the younger one wants to play most of the time - leaving the younger one bored and restless so I try entertain him with toys.

However, I was thinking about getting one more. As I have the space, the money and the time, a huge animal lover here.

Yet I'm wondering if a) 3 cats is too many to look after and b) what would happen if I introduced a 3rd ESPECIALLY if it was a female. Both these boys are desexed as would be the female (I would get another shelter cat, possibly another 18month - 2 year old not a kitten this time). I would hope that it would be a playmate for my younger one. Yet I know this could work the opposite and both may gang up on my older one. Also would a female cat play with a male cat as I've been told they have quite different behaviours - females being more connected with their owners and quieter while males generally more playful and aggressive.

Also, in about 2 years time I plan on getting a puppy. And another 2-3 yrs after that another puppy as I want two dogs and feel it's good they have playmates.

So these all are factors I have to take into account. I found a female cat that is 18months old looking for a home and I must admit I;m very tempted so suggestions welcome, thanks.

ps. I probably should also note that my council only allows 2 cats and 2 dogs per household unless you get a permit/pay for pass something like that. I will however be moving from this council area in 4 months - does it matter the council restrictions like these when I would never have 50 cats, only 3 ?!

The restrictions do matter as long as you are living there. Four months can seem like a long time! Also, have you considered the expense of all these pets? Can you afford them? You need emergency money in case one or more get sick too. What does your Vet say?

If you will be moving out in 4 months, I'd hold off on getting a new cat (and future dogs). When you move, it will be new territory - no cat will have really claimed anything, and it would probably work out better to introduce a young female (about 3-6 months old) into the household. I found it easier to bring in opposite sex (female) to a house where the resident cats were male.

Ling was resident female and she hated Charlie for months and months. She still really only tolerates him (she likes the dog better). I know we'll go thru the same thing all over again when Jack comes; and hopefully Charlie and Jack will become buddies quickly and leave Ling alone

The maturity difference between a 4 year old cat and an 18 month old cat is huge! An 18 month old cat is full grown, but still has the mentality of a kitten when it comes to play. My older cats didn't really start calming down until between 2-3 years. My two oldest are now 5 and while they still like to play the don't LIVE for it like they did 3 years ago. I would say if you didn't have a restriction on your place to go ahead and get another younger cat for a play mate, but since you are restricted to 2 cats I would wait until you move and see what the relationship is between the two then. If they play fight, thats a good thing and it sounds like they get along fine, just the older one understandably gets tired of the game before the youngster. And don't worry about the snuggling thing...some cats NEVER snuggle with another.
