Has anyone tried to make a "nesting box" for ferals?

For my colony, I'd like to get a dog crate or something similar, set it up with blankets, put it in a safe location, and make it so mum can get in and out, but predators will leave it alone, and when there's kittens, I can just cover the entrance, and grab the whole thing without having to chase kittens every which way.

Do you think this would work? Maybe something like a Sterilite container would work? What could I put in it to discourage fleas?

I have a particular spot I want to put it. The kitties are currently hanging and having kittens in a wooden enclosed area that I can't get into, and as a result I trapped one kitten who now has a fabulous home, but I think the rest have died.

Sarah, I hope someone has a thought, because I have no idea. We only have experience with shelters, not a shelter for a pregnant female.
I just know that they've never used any shelters we put out that didn't have two holes in which to get in/out of the shelter.
