Hi all...
Sorry, I really need to vent on this, please bear with me...

I take 2 or 3 times/ week walks in the neighborhood, and there is a house about 4 blocks from here that has about 15 or 17 cats, all outside , most of them 3 or 4 month old kittens. I can tell they do not take proper care of them, because I've seen them since they were born, and many have problems, 2 had eye infections ( and today I realized one of them is blind...).
Well, this afternoon I was walking my dog with my daughter in her bike, and one of their adult cats came out from their neighbor's fence dragging herself with her 2 front arms. It's so hard for me to ever write this, but... here goes ... she had no movement from her waist down, she had pooped and the poop was sticking to her fur, the 2 hind legs were dead, and I think I saw some thick blood coming out of her. She was probably in shock because I could easily approach her, even my dog, and all she wanted was to drag herself back home, and she was trying to get under a gate but she couldn't. I rang their bell many many times, nobody home. I rang their neighbor's , nobody answered. I felt like taking the poor cat to the emergency, but I was walking, with my daughter with me, no way I could carry the cat without risking damaging her even more.
I pray to God her owners got back home soon and took her to the emergency !!!
I feel guilty because I could not do one thing to help that poor cat ...
I am sorry I don't have an ending to this story... that's what happened, and I am so sad because of that.
I will go back there first thing tomorrow, and hopefully I will be able to bring better news, but for now I just needed to vent and share this sad episode with people I know would care as I do.
Prayers for the beautiful black cat tonight, please !!!

meow me, what a horrible thing you had to go through! I know sometimes your hands are tied. Would it be possible to just write a note and drop in near the house saying that someone is keeping watch on the cats and that one of them is very ill. Just say that if no action were take, Animal Control may be called to interfere? I can't really think of anything right now. Hoping that the poor cat can pull through the night. Was probably in a fight.

tutti_bella,
thanks for being online now !!!
I think the poor cat was hit by a car... it was very bad.
I am not a vet, but my guess is her spine is broken.
I have seen those people before, they do feed all those cats, they have 2 fancy new cars, and I can only hope they saw her when they got home tonight...
She was right under the gate they will have to open to get in their house. I don't think she would be able to move any further, the poor thing. It was around 6:30PM when I walked by...I don't know why I keep calling her a " her" , I may have seen her nursing the kittens before.
I will definitely check on her tomorrow first thing, and If I still find her not taken care of I will take her to the ER myself.
Thanks for your good vibes

meow me,

I know how bad you are feeling at the moment. Some people just have no sense at all, especially when it comes to caring for their *animals - as they would like to call them.
Makes me mad really when they allow their cats to roam free and not thinking for a minute, so many bad things that could happen. Either way, if you can, do check on the poor cat tomorrow and see if she is around. That's why I keep my kitty indoors at all times.

Bless you for caring about them. It is so sad when people do not take good care of their pets. In some areas you can call Animal Control to inquire about the local animal laws and get them to check on the animals. I do not think it is the same as filing a report, but at least if they check the cats can get the help they need. There are too few like you that care.

You need to call the SPCA immediately. They should be able to intervene and help the cats and kittens. Clearly these people should not own pets and they all need to be removed from that home. No doubt, the kittens have not been spayed or neutered so they'll have hundreds of cats before long. I've seen Animal Cops Miami (I see you are living in Miami) and they seem to take these situations very seriously.

Thank you for caring about this poor cat and please make some calls to Animal Control, SPCA, etc and let them handle it.

Thanks Tutti_bella, skimble and Rotobay, for your replies.

I just drove by again today to see if I either saw the cat or maybe someone, and I saw a man on his 70's feeding the cats. I guess they are more than 20.
I asked him if he took care of the injured cat that was on his driveway the night before, and, to my shock, he said he didn't notice anything.
Ok, clearly, as we all agree, they shouldn't keep any animals under those circumstances.
But if I call Animal Control, aren't they going to pick the cats up and just throw them in cages , and choose the few healthy ones to try to be adopted? And aren't they going to euthanize the ones they consider not being adoptable ( most of them , probably, have some kind of infection like the ones I know have eye problems.) ?
I need help making that decision.
Should I send someone to stop these people and risk most of those cats lives, or just do nothing and remember they at least feed the cats and they will not die ?
And what about the poor cat I saw yesterday? I breaks my heart to realize they didn't even see her, and my guess is she dragged herself to hide somewhere and is probably dead by now, but not before much pain and suffering. Oh God...:-(

Hi MeowMe,

I understand your anxiety, but you do need to call. Remember that the SPCA stands for the "Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals"..... they will NOT mistreat the cats, but will place them in a safer environment. Our local SPCA uses only foster homes for placement (IOW they will not be thrown into some cage at the pound). These cats are being horribly neglected and while I suspect that the "owners" may have good intentions, they are still neglecting the cats and many of them are suffering. If they have diseases that are treatable they will be treated, spayed and placed in good homes. If they have an untreatable disease or their suffering is so horrid, that putting them down is the most humane option, then they may have to do that. But do understand that is used as a last resort, only used to end the animal's suffering. They also strive to work with the owners to create a decent environment for the animals without even having to remove them. Sometimes people are just not educated about how to properly care for animals and can be enlightened by the SPCA. And keep in mind that if these cats don't get spayed, the 20 or so that they have will turn into thousands.

Here is a link to FAQ about reporting animal cruelty, which should alleviate some of your concerns:

http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer...#crueltyincomm

You can report animal abuse/neglect in Miami by calling 303/884-1101. You can make reports anonymously and their website says they are very committed to ending animal suffering. I really think you need to make the call so that these cats can have a better life. That better life might even be at the home where they are now living, but their owners can be educated on how to better care for them.

And thank you for caring about a cat that isn't even yours. We need more people like you in the world!

I don't know if this is close to your area. It is a no-kill shelter that may help.

Pet Rescue, Inc.
3440 NW 191 Street
Miami, FL 33056
(305) 621-8354
[email protected]
http://petrescuemiami.com

The SPCA has a list of all the shelters and rescue shelters, some of which are listed as no-kill rescue shelters. You could call the SPCA and get the phone numbers of those in your area and inquire about your local animal laws. The laws vary in different areas.

It would be better for the cats and dogs to have a safe enviroment than living in an unsafe/stressful home. Looks like you are truely a gaurdian angel. So many people see what you did and look the other way. You are the help they need. Thank you for having such a caring heart. You have taught your daughter so much about life by caring. Hope things work out.

Meow me, Here's a quote from the SPCA's website that might make you feel better about calling:

"Why is it important to report animal cruelty?

The SPCA Humane Law Enforcement department finds out about most instances of animal abuse or neglect through phone calls from concerned citizens who witness cruelty in their neighborhoods. Without tips from the public, many animals would remain in abusive circumstances, mute and unable to defend themselves. It all starts with you—that's why it's so important to learn how to recognize and report crimes against animals."

Thank you all, I was anxiously waiting for your response so I could decide what to do.
I did check the SPCA website before your answers, but I couldn't find a place where to call about abused animals. I was thinking I would have to go to Miami-Dade Animal Services, which is a high kill shelter.
No doubt I will call SPCA tomorrow first thing, or file a report online, I will find my way in your links, thank you sooo much.
I am a pet magnet, I see things like this all the time, lost and injured cats and dogs seem to find me somehow. 4 of my 5 ( all spayed) pets are rescues/adopted/found...the fifth was a gift !

I once found a Yorkie running like crazy in the middle of a busy avenue in São Paulo, Brazil ( 9 million people live there...), and, although a nice man in the area wanted to keep her until we found the owner, for some reason I said no and took her to my Gramma's house. It was Christmas Day, and someone who was in my gramma's recognized the dog as being my cousin's !!! We called her, and it was really her dog. I found the yorkie about 6 blocks away from her house, and no one noticed she was missing. Happy ending !
I have a pretty statue of Saint Francis in my porch, I am sure I get some help from him too !!!!
Well, I am also sure many of you are nodding now and the same happen to you all the time. I guess animals just have this sense of coming to some people who can't see them in pain or lonely, right?
Thanks again for helping me with this , I will keep you posted about how things go, ok?
Have you all a wonderful weekend !

Ana
