anyone else with a siamese that throws up?

hi everyone,

i was just wondering if anyone else here has a siamese cat that throws up often? she used to throw up every single day without fail. it was like she ate her food too fast and it swelled in her tummy and then came out like a tube shape. we tried feeding her in smaller amounts throughout the day, we tried feeding her on a plate so she would eat slower. none of these things worked. we have experimented and tried different foods and now it seems that she throws up 2-4 times a week. we have seen different vets for the problem and one said maybe it was irritable bowel and gave us meds, i can't remember what they were, but they had to be split in 1/4's so there were 2 sides exposed. this DID NOT go over well. there was a lot of huffing and blowing and foaming! i tried to give her one, and that was it! i couldn't imagine putting her through that stress every day! my vet now suggested that we get food that had a different source of protein that she would normally get, like a food with venison and sweet potato or something like that. she is a very picky eater. she is eating orijen now with canned grain-free wellness. she has actually put on weight on the orijen and that is really exciting for us! she was always about 6 1/2 lbs but now she is up a little more than 7 lbs. she is a very small kitty. she just turned 11 this summer, but she was always like this.

does anyone else have this problem? i read online that a lot of siamese cats are prone to this problem. i should mention that she is an old-fashioned siamese, an apple head. she also did not come from a breeder. she came from the lady upstairs from my apt who lived with her 13 cats (3 were kittens, one of whom came home with me!), her grandchild, a lobster in a tank, and a crow! so, she is not from the best of lines and pretty inbred, i think. she was the first pet i got on my own and i didn't know any better! but i wouldn't have it any other way, i love her to pieces!!! she had blood work done last winter and it came back perfect.

if you do have a problem like this what do you do to help your kitty feel better? do you have any suggestions?

thanks for your time!

She could be Allergic to alot.
My Coco who is half siamese has Ibs and Allergies.
I was told she had Ibs in 2002.
She is 16.5 now and has other problems.
How old is your cat?
Coco has Asthma and I was told more siamese and siamese mixes get that also. The food you are using should help your cat.

blue turned 11 on june 23rd.

i don't think that she has any problems with asthma. she gets runny eyes occasionally because she has the herpes virus that leads to uri. she gets runny eyes maybe one day a month or less. my other cat is having a episode of sneezing for the last week, but no other problems than the sneezing.

it is hard to get her to try different foods. the orijen and wellness combination seems to be working the best so far.

thank you for your suggest

Not all siamese get asthma but alot do.
I hope you find something that will work for her.

I have a siamese that throws up often. She is around 7 years old. She is also having some issues with her teeth and is going to have one pulled soon.

I asked my vet about her throwing up and he didn't seem to think much of it. I've been monitoring it very closely the past few weeks though.

She is also very small and only weighs around 7lbs.

I got her from her previous owner back in 2001. They had her outside just roaming around and when I walked by she ran up to me and I thought she was adorable. They told me they couldn't take care of her and I always wanted a siamese, so I took her home. She is a seal point. Very vocal and attention seeking.

Let me know if you find anything out about the vomiting. I should call my old vet and get an appointment. I hate to do that, but I'm hesitant to trust most vets.

I would try to get some vets on the phone and see what answers they give

i have already gotten the opinions of lots of vets.

the opinions are:

1. allergic to plastic, do not feed in plastic dishes (which i never do anyway)
2. eating too fast, feed smaller meals, feed on a plate (didn't work)
3. ibs, give meds (that didn't go over well, can't help if the meds can't get in the cat)
4. find a unique source of protein and carbs that she hasn't had before, maybe food sensitivity (she is a picky eater and it is very difficult to get her to eat anything different)

so, i am not sure how many other things different vets could come up with. my current vet (since we moved at the beginning of this year) is a naturopathic vet as well as providing traditional vet services. i am very pleased with her.

i was just curious if anyone else has this problem. since we switched to orijen she really has been better, but if there was a food out there that would really help and someone said that their cat was doing good on it i would give it a try.

my siamese tootsie has a weak stomach so i have to watch what she eats....like if i give her any milk...she will throw up...poor girl..she loves milk...i suspect it may be too rich for her little tummy

Most cats are lactose intolerant, so I'm guessing that's more the problem than it being rich.

I can't say we have that issue. We have had the odd throw-up - not sure if it was Bijou or Mika but it rarely happens.

I also feed Orijen and for wet I feed Merricks. Bijou and Mika both get to have a little bit of whatever we are having for dinner as well. In fact when we set the table for dinner, we always put a small plate beside hubby's so he can cut up some steak or whatever we're having for Bijou. Bijou sits beside hubby's chair and waits for his plate to be prepared.

Last night we had bacon so Mika joined in the food-fest - she loves bacon.

blue would never eat "people" food. haha!! she is so picky. she barely ever eats treats even. i have zuke's natural purrs tender chicken treats and she turns up her nose! i barely give treats, only the cuddly kind usually.

i thought that the cure-all for both kitties (vomitting in blue, and frodo's chub problem) would be raw, but they wouldn't touch the stuff! i was getting the prepared frozen stuff and if i put even the tiniest amount on their wet food they wouldn't touch it! then i tried urban king because i could cook it a bit but no way, again, they turned up their nose.

They sure can be picky. Merricks is the ONLY wet food our 2 will eat and even then they will only eat 2 flavours.

I've heard that Orijen is a rich food so that may be contributing to your problem if it's too rich for her. I honestly don't know. Sharky is our resident food expert so hopefully she will be along with some suggestions.

thank you.

i know that orijen is high in calories but i have strictly measured amounts that i feed them, due to frodo's chubbiness.

they are eating wellness canned chicken and canned turkey (both grain-free) and these is the only flavours they will eat.

hopefully sharky will give me some advice too!

I was under the impression that Orijen was a high protein versus a high calorie food. The higher calorie foods usually are the foods with lots of grains and Orijen is grain-free.

I'll let Sharky weigh in on that but I don't believe Orijen is high calorie.

orijen has 540 calories per cup. my vet said that it is high calorie, but to be completely honest, i wouldn't know myself if it is high calorie or not because i have never checked before. orijen is completely grain free and it has lots of protein (45%). i didn't think about high protein being bad for a cat. i know that too much protein is not good for a puppy - i just learned that the hard way...lots of bummy-baths. i will have to check into the amount of protein that cats need.
