You know how older computers made that "computer noise" while it was running - especially if it was stuck or loading something? Well, the new computer doesn't make that sound: it's more like a quiet "hum" which revs up a little when it's running harder. Is that normal?

Is it by chance an HP or Compaq computer? They have been using "as needed" secondary fans in their cases for a year or so. When the 2nd fan starts, that may be the revving sound you hear. Other brands may be using it by now.

It's actually something called an E-Machine, made by Intel.

Intel is the company that makes the processor and some chipsets (depending on type of mother board), they don't put the pc together and sell it. So your pc is just an eMachines brand.

Isn't it great how quiet the new computers are getting? I remember the first external hard drive I ever bought. The dang thing was almost as loud as a vacuum cleaner. And I swear, that's not all that much of an exagerration!! But as compared to twin floppy drives, a five megabyte external hard drive was pure heaven.

Those as-needed cooling fans Mike mentioned have been in use for some time in laptops, as a power-saving device.

I like how quiet it runs. But it just seems sooo weird!

I have as needed fans and hear them occasionally if I am running a lot, but they are still nowhere near as noisy as some of my older computers. I remember my first computer, you could hear it at the other end of the house.
