Hello all!

I saw in another thread that a few of you are very well-versed in coat color genetics, so I thought it was worth a shot to ask what colors to reasonably expect from my pregnant kitty. She is black. I did a little bit of research unsuccessfully, all I know for sure is that black is a dominant color gene, so I don't know what colors are even possible from a black parent.

Here are the possible fathers, from what I know of our neighborhood:

1. Red
2. Black
3. Black and White
4. Gray and White
5. Brown Tabby (not sure, it might be a female; I know the others are male).

Any insight would be greatly appreciated

One more question instead of creating another thread...she is getting black spots near the tips of her nipples that weren't there before. Is this something that a vet needs to look at or should I just try to clean them? I'm so afraid to touch her belly too much!

First the nipples - put a little vegetable oil on them and rub them - she will clean them.

As far as the colors:

Mom gives colors to females and males. Dad gives color to females.

So if mom is black and dad is red - you would get tortie girls and black males.

Black x Black = Black (M & F)

Black to Black/White = Black or Black/White (M & F)

Black to Blue (gray)/White = Black or Black/White (M & F)

Black to Brown Tabby = Black or Brown Tabby (M & F).

NOW if the mom is carrying dilute then you can also get blues and creams (substitute the black for blue in above and cream for the red)

Thank you for such a fast response! And for verifying my secret fear that the litter could possibly be all black...not that I don't like black cats, but I already have 3 of them! I reeeeally want a tortie or calico. My fur family is very grayscale. I wish there was a better resource for cat genetics out there.

Thanks for the tip about the vegetable oil, I'm going to try it tonight. The babies will be here in less than 2 weeks (I think) and I want to make sure momma is in the best shape I can get her
