Lots of you know that our son, Ben, is bipolar, and he is in the 8th grade at a public school (K-12) for kids with behavioral issues. I can't say enough about just how great the school is and how much difference it has made for Ben, and for all of us.

CA now requires algebra to be taken in 8th grade so Ben had to take a test. Guess what? His score was in the range of 11th grade algebra, which would be algebra 2.
So now he has algebra homework every day.

The first page of his packet had "challenge" problems (following pages start with the basics). One was, "if Sally rides her bike at 12mph and her brother rides 15mph, if Chad gives Sally an hour head start, in how many hours will they meet? All of could think of was those problems I did with the trains, with A leaving station A, etc. & when would A&B meet? I was always hoping for a derailment.

(FYI - the answer is in 4 hours:
12h + 12 = 15h
12 = 15h - 12h
12 = 3h
4 = h)

Ben told us that he guessed on lots of the answers on the test and we told him that those were educated guesses and he really understands how numbers work, which is the main thing.

As for reading, he long ago got to the top level, 12th grade. He is reading "The Da Vinci Code" now for his daily reading.

Did I mention that we are very proud parents and what is even better is that Ben is starting to feel good about himself?

I've also had a dislike of word problems and would also wish one of those darn trains would derail!

Congratulations and that it continues. As the year goes on Algebra gets harder but if he knows what he's doing it shouldn't be a problem.
