I think every family has its "odd" tastes, things that no other family makes, or at least isn't common.

I've mentioned the Swiss cheese fondue I make. Fondue had a period of real popularity back in the late 60's early 70's. So that's not really all that strange.

However, we've been on a lot of cruises and we've been willing to try new stuff. Now, I've only ordered lobster once in my life anywhere but on a cruise. However...

We found we DID like escargots. I know, it sounds gross to most Americans. But let me be honest here. Escargots don't taste like anything; all you taste is the butter and garlic, really.

So, we got some escargot plates, and we make fauxcargots. What I do is sautee some little button mushrooms, and then put them in the escargot plate with the butter and garlic. Good, and not gross!

The secret to good cheese fondue is cheap white wine. You don't want it to taste like anything much.

my mom makes what she calls German Sweet Rice to eat during the meal. I'm starting to think it's kinda weird though. To me it's like rice pudding. I know she puts butter, rice, sugar, and milk in the pot and then boils all of it together and then sprinkles cinnamon on top when its done. My other sister and I both tried making it but it just doesn't taste the same as my moms. I think its the pot she uses. That and she does everything by eyeballing it, no measurements.

Oh and my mom also makes weenies and cheese as she calls it. She takes a hotdog weenie splits it down the middle, puts a slice of kraft cheese around it and then wraps a slice of bacon around it and bakes it. They're not half bad. I haven't had them since I lived at home though, maybe 6-8 years?
