Marianjela has secured first seed all the way through the playoffs.
However if you will click on the KatKwery Information link below, I provide a scenario of how the playoffs might go. This is purely fictional, but hopefully everybody will understand how the playoffs will work after reading this scenario. I base it on the current standing which could change easily in the next ten days. All except the number one seed, which was locked by marianjela, using either. GoldyCat won again, using just. Well, I just wish she would have started playing KatKwery earlier. Oh well, anything can still happen. While, advanced, and difference scored no points.

Today's KatKwiz was about web site titles.

I have asked this before but do you have a web site? If so, is it one where web rankings and positioning is important to you? In five years, what do you think will be the most used search engine? It is very interesting to look at the very top ranked sites and see the coding they used; do you think this should be able to be looked at by everybody? I have personally changed the rankings on some of my sites by viewing the source code of other competing sites and tweeking my code until I got the ranking I wanted; do you think this should be legal or that I am doing underhanded things? May I remind you in my defense that it is public domain.

Thanks for the points. I only joined TCS the last day of July, so it was kind of hard to get started earlier. I stumbled across the KatKwiz when I was cruising the site, and I think I won the first time I posted an answer.
Then I won on KatKwery a couple of times before I thought to click on the link and read the rules.

I have asked this before but do you have a web site?
I do have a website, which I haven't updated for a long time. It was hard enough getting it set up without having to go in and make changes. Very steep learning curve, and I kept sliding back down to the bottom.
I need to design an entire new site with current software.

If so, is it one where web rankings and positioning is important to you?
With an outdated website, I don't think the position is critical. A couple of years ago I was keeping it up to date and had paid a company to help with the search engines. As far as I know they added keywords and frequently submitted the site to various search engines. They kept telling me that I was on the first page in a lot of different searches and that I was getting a lot of hits. However, since I was getting next to zero increase in my business, I felt that it was not worth the $600+ per year that I was paying them. I just did a google search for "wildflower photography workshops" except did not include the quotation marks. Even without the expensive assistance I've only dropped to the second page.

In five years, what do you think will be the most used search engine?
No idea, if you're looking for a specific name. I think it will be whichever one is the easiest to use. I used to switch back and forth between two or three different search engines depending on whether I wanted to find a website or a document. Now I mostly use google because it's so much easier and I don't have to do much thinking ahead of time.

Hey, if it's out there legally why not make use of it? I can just about guarantee you that the people at the top did not come up with their set of words unassisted. And no, I do not think it should be made illegal or hidden or whatever. Words are words and should be free for everyone to use. Another point of interest, did you know that you can copyright a body of work but you cannot copyright a title?

I don't have a website at this time. I want to make one for my girls but just haven't found the time nor energy to. I pay no attention at all to rankings and coding. I really have no idea what is going to be the top search engine in five years, maybe Google since it seems to be on everyone's radar right now. I know that a lot of other engines actually use google. Everything is fair in love and war or should I say in tweeking your site until you get the ranking you want. To each their own. I don't think you are being underhanded, public domain or not.

Why, yes, I do have a web site. I made one for my son over three years ago, but have recently transferred it over to Google's Blogger. I love actually love the freedom this site allows me and I enjoy being able to personalize it.

The ranking of the site is not important to me. Basically the site was made to keep family and friends updated on Joshua's progress and it is less about popularity. I admittedly do enjoy seeing the hits on his site climb, but I enjoy seeing people when people I know visit. I suppose if I was selling something, or had a website where I was trying to educate people and wanted to draw traffic to that site, I imagine I would pay more attention on what to do to increase the views.

In five years I think the most used search engine will continue to be Google. I personally like to use Yahoo-based GoodSearch, but mostly because it donates money to the charity of your choice for every search you make. That's easy money for a 501 C 3! If you check out the Nielson NetRatings, you will see that Google is the most used search engine out there. According to them, just a fraction over 49% use Google, next is Yahoo at 23% then MSN and AOL. But who knows really what will happen in the next five years. Who knows what will happen. I'm sure ten years ago, AOL thought they would be on top forever.

According to Berkeley, Google has one of the largest databases. But they do suggest backing up your searches with Yahoo and Ask.com.

You never know Lee, the search engine you mentioned before, Cuil, could be the newest and greatest upcoming trend.

Although, really - I am impressed with everything Google has to offer so far. I see AltaVista and Live Search thrown in the mix around the web especially when wanting to bookmark a website. If you read about search engines on Wired.com, they are calling WiseNut, Google's possible successor. Saying it's a "new generation of scrappy search engines". They say that Google is popular because it is simple and it works, and they agree that Google has the largest URL database and it often returns highly relevant search results. They attest that all empires must fall, and that if Google has any faults, it is their strength that will cause their downfall. That having too many results to sift through can be detrimental.

So of course I was reading about top-ranked sites. One site actually joked that they would teach you how to get banned by Google!

As far as looking at the code of top ranked sites, well until today, I have never really even considered what the top ten or one hundred site on the web would even be. A simple [google] search turns up: CNET, Flickr, ESPN.com, National Geographic Online, Slate, Amazon.com, ZDNet, eBay, CNN and E*Trade. Some of those I am surprised at, and one I have really not even heard of, but some of them I am not surprised in the least!

I checked out the source code on eBay and see that their homepage has 15 meta tags/keywords, but really, that is *just* their homepage. I suppose with the number of pages they have, their keywords number in the millions. If you think about it - probably every single item listed has it's own keyword phrase based on it's title.

I wonder if there is a way to hide the coding of your page. I dont know if it makes a difference to the everyday person whether or not it can be seen. I suppose the laymen dont even realize it's there or how to access it. And if by chance they do discover that they can right-click on it and do view the page source, will they know what it means? or how to decipher it? or even what to so with it?!

I have done similar "tweaking" of keywords and tags on YouTube, to try and boost the views it was getting by analyzing the tags the top view-getters were using and applying the same methods that applied.

I think it is perfectly legal. It is brainstorming of sorts.
There must be a reason they allow the code to be public to begin with. I'm sure the people that have the top hits right now, werent always successful and they probably relied on the same trial and error tactics until they got it just right.

Well... I need to get the kids in the tub. Maybe I'll be on later tonight.

Thanks for the points again Lee. I really appreciate them! Look for the exciting new contest I've been talking about to come out tomorrow! I'm so excited.

Congrats to Marienjela! Good work!

I dont have a website of my own at this time. If I did I dont think that rankings would be too important but you never know until you actually create one. I had a homepage several years ago but have since given it up along with most of my internet sites that I use. Which pretty much has begun to include the cat site, none of the old members I use to talk to are even on here anymore so the only reason I come on is for information and to play katkwery which has not been lucky for me this past month so Ive kind of given up on it. I think Google is a pretty popular search engine, alot of people use it but it always changes! I remember when ask jeeves (or something like that) was very popular! AOL is a popular one although not one I personally care for, Yahoo is good and mywebsearch is everywhere. I dont know if the coding should be viewable for everyone because them people would be able to recreate the website and that would not make the owners to happy. Giving hackers all the info they need to know is just a bad idea, and with some of them as soon as they figure out the coding the rest follows shortly behind it. It doesn't sound as if you're doing anything wrong because if you were it would be illegal and not legal. So if the law says its okay who am I to argue. I guess if you feel what you are doing is dishonest than its your own conscious you have to deal with and if its perfectly legal my conscious wouldn't bother me unless it was personally hurting someone else. Blah blah blah yadda yadda yadda have a nice night yall!

oh, Lee - i used 'advanced' - see post #4...

ok, onto the Kwery! i have a couple of websites - one is for school, & the other was created to honor those animals we're all so fond of - All About Cats. hasn't been updated in several years, tho... life just has a way of getting too busy! the school one i'm required to update weekly, so i do - otherwise, i wouldn't bother. rank & positioning means nothing to me, btw. also, my preferred search engine is Ask Jeeves! i rarely look at the coding on any website i visit unless i'm looking for something specifically - again, don't really care! but if it's important to you, then i don't see a problem w/the tweaking you've done.

We do have a website! I have no idea what you mean by rankings and positioning, so no, I guess I have to say it is not important to me at all! Well, this is really my husband's site, he created it for our family. So maybe he cares about that stuff, but I'm the one that uses it, and I don't.

I still like Google.
Not sure what is the most used now, but Google is the most used by me! I've only ever used a few others, like Yahoo and... Yahoo. There must be more out there, but I don't know of them. One, I'm a creature of habit. Two, I'm totally computer illiterate, so not sure how I'd even figure out there are other search engines. And three, I really like that Google has such a clean web page. No ads, no crap, no "news", nothing annoying. Just "search". Very nice!
So, though I can't guess what will be most used, I do hope it will still be Google. Or at least another nice one like it!

"It is very interesting to look at the very top ranked sites and see the coding they used; do you think this should be able to be looked at by everybody?"??
I think this is written in English, but the meaning is sure over my head! I know hubby would understand and since it's computer-related, I'm sure he'd be interested! But, me? No... I might be interested if I understood it!
Should it be able to be looked at by everybody?? I dunno... Yes? Public info? Internet stuff? Learning material?

"I have personally changed the rankings on some of my sites by viewing the source code of other competing sites and tweeking my code until I got the ranking I wanted; do you think this should be legal or that I am doing underhanded things?" I think this one is written in Russian... Though, since it's you, I definitely don't think you are doing underhanded things.
Sounds like it is legal, and should be, since it can be done...

But then again, since you had to remind us in your defense, maybe it is underhanded!!
Though, as I said earlier, before I read that, it is public info, so why shouldn't it be legal to see public info??

I think I like KatKweries about cats better.
Though this is a good learning experience for me!
