*** idea ***

HI Everyone !!

I don't come here much.... due to my life being somewhat challenging at
the moment I have cut down on computer time....

so when I pop in I usually look really quickly under SOS And Taking Care of
Ferals to see if there is anyone in my neck of the woods I can help with
either lending them a trap or a cage or whatever.

however other than clicking on every thread to see who lives where thats
kind of hard.

so I was thinking that if those who are interested in finding people in their
area wanted to be easily identified that they could either add the letters
of their state in capitals so it would stand out on the end of their screen
name (IF THAT IS POSSIBLE ??) like for instance mine would be.........
PrettyboyNY and if I wanted to get even more detailed it could be ......
PrettyboyNYLI which would say I am from New York and I am on
Long Island.

Not sure if we can change our names after the fact ?? Guess we would need
a mod to tell us that.

My second idea was .... in case the first one is not possible .... is that
all those looking for some kind of physical assistance from people in
their area should put their state someplace in their subject line....
so that people like me who pop on here real quick wanting to help
can just click on those threads from their state to see if they can help.

Great idea! And I've always thought that it would be good if everyone (whether looking for help or not) would put an actual location in their location line. It's nice to have some sense of where in the world people are!

For those who are concerned about security, just a general idea would be good enough -- like "NW Ohio" or "Southern Mexico."

You can't change your name after the fact, but I think it would be great idea if SOS/Ferals posters put their city or state in the subject line.

There are myriad reasons for people not to put their location in their profiles. I've only added "in Europe" to my location this past year, to give people a better idea of my time zone should they need to reach a mod who can respond relatively quickly.

A few bad experiences with some members who felt called upon to deny me any right to discuss U.S. politics because I live in Germany caused me to remove that info from my profile. They obviously wrongly assumed that I wasn't an American. Why they felt only U.S. citizens could discuss U.S. politics is still a puzzle to me.

You could also start local Groups from your Profile Page and then people could do a search of the groups for the areas that may be of interest to them such as, NorthEast, North Central, NorthWest, etc...

The User Groups are a relatively new and unused resource here at TCS and might be just what you are looking for. You can access them from your profile page.

I have to admit that I never really looked into them.

I will have to look into the user groups. Thanks.

Just thought that those in the trying to help ferals and especially
those in the SOS forums who need help immediately would benefit
if they put their state in the subject line.

jcat i am so sorry for the bad experiences you had. hugs.

I only have Long Island in my location area. I figure thats vague enough
that no one will be able to find me unless I tell them where I am.

Now let me go find those user groups to see what thats about.

okay so if I start a group am I responsible for monitoring that group ?

Good question - I suppose you are.

All groups are subject to the general TCS rules and posts there may be edited by the team if needs be. However, I do think a group leader will be the one responsible for generally monitoring the group and "leading" it in the direction he/she envisions. If anyone doesn't like that vision, they can always start their own group.

This being a relatively new feature, right now I guess we just need to let it go live and see how it goes As long as our general rules are maintained, I don't foresee any problems, so good luck with it and happy grouping!

okay as soon as I get a free moment I will give it a try.

however it does concern me since I am not on the computer much
and if someone were to post something inappropriate I would have
no way of removing it anyway.

but as mentioned... it is new ..... so i guess that will all be figured out.

I had seen the link but never clicked on it so I joined the Canadian one

gayef and jcat ... just want to throw this idea out for you and the
others that set up this board/forum.

maybe you could put an area on the main board telling people that
once they join they can also check out the the individual groups the
members have started and possibly meet local people.

the reason I am suggesting this is that it just took me 15 minutes to find
the group area. I had forgotten where it was and how to find it.
I was just about to give up and I remembered that I kept the link to
this thread and pulled it up to read where it was posted how to find it.

Are you referring to a group that was set up via the forum's groups options? I don't think we have those for every region?

I'm talking about when you go to your profile and from there you
can join the different groups or make one up yourself.

I guess thats called the group area but I'm not sure.

Anyway.... I found it and made up a group for my area but I don't
expect much traffic since its so hard to find.

I was just trying to throw an idea out there on how maybe the cat site
can maybe put a link in the main forum area that would lead members
to the group area without going through the profile area.

Not sure I explained that right ? LOL!!
