I don't know how you all do it. I couldn't live in a place that had storms of that magnitude. Give me -40 degrees and tons of snow any day!!

If Ike is as bad as Rita was, I AM moving back to the cold & snow!!

It's almost a certainty that we'll lose power, so I'm prepared for it. Hopefully, it won't be as hot as it was after Rita blew through!
I went through two typhoons in Guam, and the island actually turned off the power before the winds started tearing down the lines to avoid any electrocutions or fires. So don't be surprised and it may just be a precaution, not actual damage.

My prayers are with you sweetie! Keep us posted as long as you can!

Yes, to be on the East side of the storm is where the stronger winds are.....and the likelihood of tornados forming.

Just about an hour ago on the news they were reporting that people were already stuck on their rooftops. The only reason for them to be on their roof would be that they must have water in their homes already. They are only experiencing tropical storm winds at this point and it's bad enough that they are on their roof??????!!!!!!! Sadly, something tells me they may not make it. They also reported that the 3 people tied themselves together up there.

I heard that approximately 40% of the people in Galveston chose not to leave!
There is no way on earth that I would stay if I lived on the coast like that and a storm of this magnitude was coming in.

No kidding...

I saw a quote somewhere about how they 'trust their seawall'. etc, etc... Oh, right, you mean that wall with the water coming over it?

I'd have high tailed it out!

I hope those who didn't are all right... And that no pets got caught in there either, locked in houses or tied up in yards.

The best news I heard was the SPCA of Houston had evacuated all of their animals to the facility in McKinney, Texas, yesterday. While it will be crowded, at least those animals are safe. I am going to take them some supplies tomorrow. I'm willing to walk dogs if they need the help.

Personally, I'm glad the Coast Guard has decided not to risk their people for the people who refused to leave and then changed their mind when it was no longer safe to rescue them.

For one of the previous hurricanes, msnbc.com had a graphic showing a satelleite view of predicted flooding around Galvestion Bay with a previous, lessor hurricane (it changed direction). It was incredible to see so much of Houston underwater.

I was wrong. I just heard Jim Cantore say that only 40% of the people left the island. That means that 60% stayed!

Idiots!

I'm sorry, but if you were ordered to evacuate, and didn't, and your house blows apart with you in it, then you really have nobody to blame but yourself if someone gets hurt or killed. There is NO reason to take a chance like that.

i don't expect much up here other than heavy rains & some wind [currently forecast @ 35-39 mph]... too far inland for things to stay as bad as they are looking down south. i'm only about an hour south of oklahoma - hurricanes usually just mean rain for us.
