In light of what's going on off the coast of Texas today, let me recommend "Isaac's Storm," a book about Isaac Cline, the Galveston weatherman whose mistakes were at least in part responsible for the huge death toll of the hurricane that destroyed Galveston 108 years ago this week. The official death toll was 8,000, and it may have been higher than that. Among them was Isaac's pregnant wife.
And I am enjoying Terry Pratchett's "Mort." Turns out Death is a great short-order cook, and a real cat lover.
