You might like The Thirteenth Tale by Diane (Diana?) Setterfield.

I would recommend Divisidero by Michael Ondaatje, though it is a little heartbreaking, it is one of the best books I have read in some time.

On the west side of... of... somewhere.
I normally don't read that kind of novel... more of a sci-fi/fantasy girl myself... but I received this book to do a review on and had a heck off a time putting it down, especially during the second half. I read that in one day.

The Spirit of the Place, by Samuel Shem. It's about a doctor who left his hometown years before and has been galavanting around Europe... when he receives a telegram that his mother has passed away... he returns to find conditions placed upon his inheritance...

It's not full of murder or craziness... but it's a beautifully done novel... if you like 'soul/spiritual journey' types of stories, this is definitely a good place. I even bawled my eyes out over one particular scene near the end (if you read it, you may understand which one).
